I can provide anecdotal evidence to support the fact that Erie use to freeze over regularly and sometimes before January.

As a kid back in the 50's I, well me and my best friend Mike Burke, walked (sledded) from the US side to the Canadian side across Lake Erie. Boy did I get my a s s whipped, and cuffed upside the head, repeatedly, for that stunt.

Mikey and I were kind of the long distance vagabonds around where we lived. We were the youngest kids in our area and tended to stay away from the older kids, so we wouldn't catch so much grief from them, if we stayed to ourselves. We would get up at the crack of dawn and get off into the woods and fields looking for pheasants or wild strawberries or go roaming the shore line on Lake Erie. Back in them days our only marching orders were to be home by dark or dinner time which ever came first, or call if we were going to be late.

More than a few times this ended up with us calling my mother around dark to come get us at the end of the day, where ever we ended up. Well this time my mother decided to make a point that we needed to stay closer to home. She told us we were just going to have to walk ourselves home, dinner was going to be late and dad was working the late shift at the Lackawanna steel plant, so we should just walk home, the long cold walk would teach us. I told her I didn't think we could do that because we couldn't see the other side and didn't want to get lost, or fall in. "See the other side of what?" was the response, the lake I told her. "You mean grand dads pond?" No the Big Lake! She had me put the old French guy who's door we had knocked on, on the phone, all I heard from the old guy on our side was mostly a bunch of we we's and Mon Dieu's. Seemed like we set there for an awful long time, two or three hours at least, with the old Frenchman just shaking his head and staring at us, like we were going to run for it, before my mom and dad showed up. That's when I got the first whipping, wasn't bad, snowsuit took most of the heat, just before Mikey and I got packed into the back seat of Aunt Betty's huge old Packard.

When we got home, now that was another story all together, my mother wailed on my bare a s s with my dad's leather razor strop to the point I though I was going to die. I was probably lucky that she was the one doing the whipping, I never before or since seen the kind of look on my old mans face that I saw that night, I truly know the face of pure rage. My old man when out in the garage which was just outside my room's back door. There was a hellasious bunch of noise out there for a good while. My old mans hands were bandaged for a week after that. Funny thing though my old man never in his life laid a hand on me, ever, but I suspect I got near as close to it that nigh as I did to dyeing that day.

Later on I found out we had walked, well sledded mostly, 10 or 15 miles from Pinehurst on the New York side of the lake to Point Albino on the Canadian side. Damn my a s s hurts just thinking about this. Not to mention I was not allowed out of my room for a month, dinner and bathroom only. I missed Christmas and New Years that year, Mikey and I had pulled our little stunt a few days before Christmas. We'd had a big ice storm come through a few days before and this was the first really clear day that we had seen in weeks, so we were hot to be out and about. He11 it was the middle of summer before my mother stopped sneaking up on me and smacking me on top of the head and yelling don't you ever go out on that ice again. Now days if some kids were to pull that kind thing, if they could, it would probably be splashed all over CNN or something.

Years later my old man told me that likely the only reason he could think of that we didn't go through the ice out in the middle of the lake somewhere was that we were small and light and we were on them sleds, which spread our weight out along the runners. He11 one good push and it seemed like those old Flexible Flyers would slide darn near forever out on that clear smooth lake ice. It was sort of like sliding on a black mirror, damn, gives me the willies every time I think about it now days, how truly close to death we were, a couple inches or less in some places, I suspect.

A few years later we had moved to Florida and my mother and I were in the grocery store. I was wandering all over the store as was my usual want to do. I had just gotten back to my mother and the cart with something I wanted to get her to buy for me, just in time to hear some elderly lady asking my mother if she was worried about me getting lost in such a large store, wandering by myself? My mother burst out laughing at the women, "What him get lost, not very likely", the old lady was of course was somewhat taken aback by my mothers laughter, and for my part I caught one on top of the head and asked somewhat sharply, "Just where have you been?" My mother had a funny bemused look on her face, as she said it, now days thinking back to then, I can't help but wonder if she wasn't thinking about my little jaunt to Canada across a barely frozen Lake Erie, and her thinking how hilarious the idea of me getting lost in a grocery store was given my history. I am sure the old lady, Mrs. Green a very refined old southern Lady, who some years later would be my high school English teacher, thought the new family in town was crazy as bed bugs.
