It's not that vehicles can't stop under normal circumstances with the stopping distance of about 1700-1750ft. It's that there is no room for error or any malfunction at all. Equipment can fail or only operate 75% of capacity, etc. If you are already using everything available, it isn't just a matter of making a little trip to the sandbox. At 130mph, you could downshift and work your speed down to a "safe" level before hitting the sand. At 190 it's a whole different ballgame. |
