Army slashing 8,700 jobs as budget cuts begin

With deeper budget cuts looming, the Pentagon is starting to cut back by trimming the Defense Department’s civilian workforce.

The Army said Thursday it is moving forward with plans announced in July to cut about 8,700 positions, using a mix of early retirement offers, buyouts and attrition to trim the jobs by the end of the fiscal year in late September.

“Army commands and agencies are continuing to take necessary actions to reduce their civilian on-board strength to meet funded targets established by the secretary of defense and reflected in the President’s budget,” Thomas R. Lamont, assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs, said in a statement. “To the maximum extent possible, the Army will rely on voluntary departures to achieve these manpower reductions.”

The cuts will come in 37 states at 70 different locations across eight commands and agencies with nearly 90 percent of the cuts taking place within the Installation Management Command, Army Materiel Command and the Training and Doctrine Command. Most of the cuts are likely to occur in Virginia and Texas, where most of the DOD’s civilian workers are located.

The dangerous debate over cutting military spending

We shouldn’t gut defense. A central question of our budget debates is how much we allow growing spending on social programs to crowd out the military and, in effect, force the United States into a dangerous, slow-motion disarmament.

People who see military cuts as an easy way to reduce budget deficits forget that this has already occurred. From the late 1980s to 2010, the number of America’s armed forces dropped from 2.1 million men and women to about 1.4 million. The downsizing — the “peace dividend” from the end of the Cold War — was not undone by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 1990, the Army had 172 combat battalions, the Navy 546 ships and the Air Force 4,355 fighters; today, those numbers are 100 battalions, 288 ships and 1,990 fighters.

Now our concept of national security — and demands on the military — has become expansive and murky. Aside from preventing attacks on the homeland, goals include: stopping terrorism; countering China’s rise; combating cyber warfare; limiting nuclear proliferation (Iran, North Korea); averting the loss or theft of nuclear weapons (Pakistan?); safeguarding sea routes and some major oil producers; and providing humanitarian assistance in major natural disasters.

The dangerous debate over cutting military spending

Debt-panel failure would result in ‘devastating’ defense cuts,

North Korea making missile able to hit U.S.

New intelligence indicates that North Korea is moving ahead with building its first road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile, an easily hidden weapon capable of hitting the United States, according to Obama administration officials.

Will Toys"R"Us have the RQ-170 Sentinel in time for Christmas ?

Although there are risks that Iran could attempt to reverse engineer the technology, or sell it to other countries, like China, U.S. officials believe that Iran will not be able to mine the drone's computer systems to learn details of the U.S. surveillance mission.

there are risks

U.S. Proposes Unmanned Border Entry With Mexico

The bloody drug war in Mexico shows no sign of relenting. Neither do calls for tighter border security amid rising fears of spillover violence.

This hardly seems a time the U.S. would be willing to allow people to cross the border legally from Mexico without a customs officer in sight. But in this rugged, remote West Texas terrain where wading across the shallow Rio Grande undetected is all too easy, federal authorities are touting a proposal to open an unmanned port of entry as a security upgrade.

"Now people are going to return."

Obama to slash National Guard force on U.S.-Mexico border

Citing budget cuts, the Obama administration early next year will cut the number of National Guard troops patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border by at least half, according to a congressman who was briefed on the plan.

The National Guard said an announcement will be made by the White House “in the near future,” but Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican who has learned of the plans, said slashing the deployment in half is the minimum number, and he said it will mean reshuffling the remaining troops along the nearly 2,000-mile border.

Sending guard troops to the border is a recurring strategy

As the propaganda machine marches on!
A story the other day said employers can't find qualified employees in many cases even with all of the unemployed! With over 100 federal job retraining programs one would think there would be numerous people qualified for every position!
The example used of the 18 year unmarried rug rat with a rug rat of her own and Zero skills is a sterling example!

I mentioned in another thread that we are looking for welders where I work. Over the past 10 years of job losses in our area, we have lost most of the welders in this community to retirement, moving away, or finding work at other companies. I'm not sure about the federal training programs, but there sure isn't any training going on in our community.

That's the beauty of federal programs!
There is virtually zero useful training going on anywhere BUT we the tax payers are paying billions of dollars for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are thousands of these "training" places set up to gobble up the federal grants. They "help" some gullible dupe get the federal grant knowing the person doesn't have the gumption to complete the training and the government will make very little effort to collect from the "student" after they drop out!
Numerous truck driving schools and heating and AC schools survive like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can only assume that you are correct about this. Our local CC does sponsor some truck driving training, and I am sure that is govt funded somehow. But there sure isn't anything else around here.

Just had a friend get free money through unemployment to do 2 years(?) Hobart Welding school. Had a heart attack just before finishing. After he got up and running again he went back and finished.

Worked maybe 6 months (and I'm being generous)as a welder. Applied for and got SS disability and now stays home and waits patiently by the mailbox for his check..

Schools are out there either through state of federal funding.

I am eligible for a post 911 education grant through the VA. I have actually went to Texas College and have the paperwork filled out for welding classes and I am sitting on it. I don't know if I want to waste my time and go through it just to say I did it and not use whatever I learn. Seems like a wast of money.

I can get enough to pay for everything AND get a living expense on top of it. It's pro rated to how many hours a week of school I take.

Of late I see so many able bodied people free loading off of government programs I've changed my advice if somebody asks me about free government handouts!
Not long ago a woman told me all of a sudden they got a notice their kids were eligible for free lunches but she didn't want to take them.
I told her in no uncertain terms to go for it, there are too many undeserving people using up her tax money to not take advantage of it!
A few years ago my advice would have been the opposite!
