During the first half of August, Arctic ice extent declined more slowly than during the same period in 2007 and 2008. The slower decline is primarily due to a recent atmospheric circulation pattern, which transported ice toward the Siberian coast and discouraged export of ice out of the Arctic Ocean. It is now unlikely that 2009 will see a record low extent, but the minimum summer ice extent will still be much lower than the 1979 to 2000 average. http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ http://igloo.atmos.uiuc.edu/cg...&sm=09&sd=03&sy=2009 http://www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/loop/ak-1mo-loop.html

NOAA: Summer Temperature Below Average for U.S. September 10, 2009 The average June-August 2009 summer temperature for the contiguous United States was below average – the 34th coolest on record, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. August was also below the long-term average. The analysis is based on records dating back to 1895. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/s...910_summerstats.html

"We're heading off to a climate extreme and this is just going to snowball," says Curry, reflecting on the state of the global climate on the Greenpeace icebreaker hosting the Woods Hole research team. Greenpeace has been variously criticized for being too radical, too alarmist,[41] or too mainstream, for using methods bordering on eco-terrorism, for having itself caused environmental damage in its activities, for taking positions which are not environmentally or economically sound, and for valuing non-human causes over human causes. These criticisms have been made by governments, industrial and political lobbyists and other environmental groups. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenpeace

Arctic Ice to Last Decades Longer Than Thought? This year's cooler-than-expected summer means the Arctic probably won't experience ice-free summers until 2030 or 2040, scientists say. Some models had previously predicted that the Arctic could be ice free in summer by as soon as 2013, due to rising temperatures from global warming. http://news.nationalgeographic...-arctic-sea-ice.html They can't be reliably on a short time scale yet somehow global warming can be presented as a guaranteed scientific fact many years into the future???????

Yet the final result is still ice-free summers. What does that tell you?

What happened to global warming? This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998. But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8299079.stm
