Obama's ISIS Navel-Gazing Emboldens Islamists
On Thursday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that the threat of the Islamic State in Syria and the Levant was “beyond anything we’ve seen.” He explained:

They are an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether it's in Iraq or anywhere else…as sophisticated and well-funded as any group we have seen…They are beyond just a terrorist group. They marry ideology, a sophistication of ... military prowess. They are tremendously well-funded. This is beyond anything we've seen.

Just months ago, in February, Hagel stumped for some of the largest cuts to the military in American history; he proposed cutting the Army to pre-World War II size. “For the first time in 13 years we will be presenting a budget to the Congress of the United States that's not a war-footing budget," Hagel explained. "That's a defining budget because it starts to reset and reshape.”

This has been working out beautifully.

(AFP) -- King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has warned that the West will be the next target of the jihadists sweeping through Syria and Iraq, unless there is "rapid" action.

"If we ignore them, I am sure they will reach Europe in a month and America in another month," he said in remarks quoted on Saturday by Asharq al-Awsat daily and Saudi-backed Al-Arabiya television station.

"Terrorism knows no border and its danger could affect several countries outside the Middle East," said the king who was speaking at a welcoming ceremony on Friday for new ambassadors, including a new envoy from Saudi ally the United States.

The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group has prompted widespread concern as it advances in both Syria and Iraq, killing hundreds of people, including in gruesome beheadings and mass executions.

Lack of action would be "unacceptable" in the face of the phenomenon, King Abdullah said.

"You see how they (jihadists) carry out beheadings and make children show the severed heads in the street," he said, condemning the "cruelty" of such acts.

And what are we going to do when China decides not to play nice? Not only will military supplies be in jeopardy but there won't be anything on Walmart shelves. We won WWII by turning our manufacturing might into military production. Good luck with that today. Hopefully we can win a world war with a new free mobile app.

U.S. Justice Department to investigate Ferguson police after teen shooting

The U.S. Justice Department announced on Thursday it will launch a civil investigation into the police department in Ferguson, Missouri, where unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white policeman last month.

The probe is the second federal investigation spurred by Brown's death at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson, which sparked days of sometimes violent protests in Ferguson. The Justice Department is simultaneously investigating possible criminal charges against the police officer who shot Brown.

Attorney General Eric Holder, who visited Ferguson after the shooting, said residents there "consistently expressed concerns" and "deep mistrust" of the police, prompting the federal investigation.

Holder said he has not ruled out widening the investigation into other jurisdictions in the Ferguson area, including St. Louis County. Civil rights groups have called for a broader investigation.
The probe will examine how the Ferguson police use force

Big Jobs Miss in August, Just 142K Added
On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the economy gained just 142,000 jobs in August. The number was a big disappointment, as economists had been expecting a gain of around 230,000. The unemployment rate for the month was unchanged at 6.1%.

Friday's report snaps a 6-month streak of monthly job gains above 200k. It should also put to rest any belief that the economy is finally posed for an economic "breakout" after a very slow first quarter of the year.

WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said he will explain to Americans and congressional leaders this week his plan to "start going on some offense" against Islamic State militants, who he said could eventually become a threat to the United States.

Obama will make a speech on Wednesday to "describe what our game plan's going to be," and meet congressional leaders on Tuesday to seek their support for his strategy to halt the militant Islamist group, which controls parts of Syria and Iraq.

White House reportedly planning years-long campaign to destroy ISIS
The Obama administration is reportedly preparing a campaign to destroy the Islamic State militant group that could outlast the president's remaining time in office, according to a published report.

The New York Times, citing U.S. officials, reported late Sunday that the White House plan involves three phases that some Pentagon officials believe will require at least three years of sustained effort.

U.S. not at war with ISIS
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday would not say the United States is at war with ISIS, telling CNN in an interview that the administration's strategy includes "many different things that one doesn't think of normally in context of war."

"What we are doing is engaging in a very significant counterterrorism operation," Kerry told CNN's Elise Labott in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. "It's going to go on for some period of time. If somebody wants to think about it as being a war with ISIL, they can do so, but the fact is it's a major counterterrorism operation that will have many different moving parts."

Kerry made a distinction between ISIS and terror groups operating in Somalia and Yemen.
U.S. not at war with ISIS

Don’t Call It a War? Administration hit for refusing to use ‘w’ word for ISIS mission

The Obama administration is refusing to describe the expanded military campaign against the Islamic State as a war -- despite plans to launch airstrikes across two tumultuous Middle East countries, dispatch hundreds more U.S. military personnel and build a coalition of nations to ultimately “destroy” the growing terror network.

The reluctance to use that label has generated confusion on Capitol Hill, particularly in light of new intelligence estimates that the Islamic State has as many as 31,500 fighters across Iraq and Syria. That’s the size of a small army – and close to the estimated size of the Taliban force in 2001.

Yet in television interviews on Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry repeatedly avoided the term “war” to describe the mission, instead calling it a “major counterterrorism operation” that could last a long time.

“This is John Kerry, vintage,”

In January, President Barack Obama dismissed the Islamic State (ISIS) as merely a “JV team.” Last week, Obama reversed that position and told NBC News ISIS is “not a JV team.” Similarly, two weeks ago Obama said the Islamic State can be shrunk to “a manageable problem.” Then on Friday, as NBC News reported, “The Obama administration said for the first time Friday that the United States is ‘at war’ with ISIS militants.”

Obama repeats US mission on defeating Islamic State

President Obama on Saturday restated his plan to destroy Islamic State but did not say the United States "is at war" with the Middle East terror group, creating more uncertainty what exactly is the U.S. mission.

"We're moving ahead with our strategy to degrade and ultimately destroy this terrorist organization," Obama said in his weekly radio and online address.

The president's language was almost identical to what he said Wednesday when he told the country in a prime-time TV address that the United States would launch direct air strikes in Iraq on the terror group and that he has OK’d such strikes in Syria, as part of a broader counter-terrorism effort with allies.

but avoids the word 'war’
