Obama calls for immediate truce as Gaza toll soars

Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - US President Barack Obama called for an "immediate ceasefire" between Israel and Hamas on Sunday, after the bloodiest day of fighting in Gaza raised the number of Palestinians killed to 476.

The UN Security Council expressed concern for the growing number of casualties in Gaza and issued a fresh appeal for an immediate ceasefire as Israel ramped up a major military offensive with fresh strikes Monday in the Palestinian territory

Netanyahu, Palestinian leader blame each other for rising death toll in conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeatedly blamed Hamas on Monday for the rising death toll in their conflict, saying the militant group is trying to create more casualties by using civilians as human shields and downplaying concerns that images of the carnage could sway international support.

“We have to clear out the homes [in which] Hamas put civilians, Palestinian civilians,” Netanyahu told Bret Baier on Fox News’ “Special Report.” “We go out to ferret out rocketeers and anti-tank rocket fire.

Hamas put civilians there.”

US pushes for truce as Gaza battle rages

John Kerry landed in Tel Aviv despite a Federal Aviation Administration ban following a Hamas rocket near the airport the day before, reflecting his determination to achieve a cease-fire agreement between the warring sides.

Kerry was to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Jerusalem and Ramallah in what appeared to be a crucial day in the flailing talks. U.S. officials have downplayed expectations for an immediate, lasting truce between Israel and the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza.

Transfer Of Russian Rocket Systems To Separatists In Ukraine Appears Imminent

WASHINGTON, July 25 (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Friday the transfer of heavy-caliber multiple-launch rocket systems from Russia to Ukrainian separatists appeared to be imminent with the arms close enough to the border they could be handed over "potentially today."

"We have indications that the Russians intend to supply heavier and more sophisticated multiple-launch rocket systems in the very near future," said Army Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, adding that the weapons were in the over-200mm range.

Israel rejects Kerry's cease-fire plan as deadly clashes escalate in Gaza

Israel's security cabinet unanimously rejected U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's proposal for a temporary cease-fire in Gaza Friday, as bloody clashes continued between Israel and Islamic militants.

However, it appeared there could be a brief humanitarian pause in the fighting Saturday.

U.S. plan would let Hamas keep its rockets
The cease-fire draft U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry presented to Israel on Friday evening contained practically no mention of Israel's security needs or of demilitarizing the Gaza Strip of rockets and heavy weaponry or of the need of destroying the terror tunnels linking Gaza to Israeli territory,

Kerry's cease-fire draft revealed:

Hamas's Shift to Tunnel Warfare Catches Israel by Surprise

JERUSALEM — Israel entered its latest conflict with Hamas armed with a high-tech arsenal, real-time battlefield intelligence and strong domestic support for dealing a heavy blow to Hamas.

But again on Friday, Israeli forces were taken by surprise, this time with two soldiers killed and one taken prisoner when militants once again attacked from a tunnel leading from Gaza into Israel.

WASHINGTON — House and Senate lawmakers scrambled to leave town on Friday night for a five-week recess, with a failure to address the refugee crisis at the southern border only the latest indignity in a year that may redefine congressional dysfunction.

The 113th Congress this week took another step toward ignominy as one of the least productive, most divided in history. Vocal Republicans were empowered, virtually dictating terms of two House border security bills even after party leaders had spent much of the year trying to marginalize them.

Dr. Kent Brantly, one of two American Ebola patients, arrives safely at Emory University

Dr. Kent Brantly, one of two Americans who contracted the deadly Ebola virus while working in West Africa, landed in the U.S. Saturday and arrived safely at Emory University Hospital to begin treatment.

Brantly, landed at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Ga., and arrived at the Atlanta hospital at around 12:30p.m. He managed to walk into the facility with the assistance of another medical worker.

The details of why he was selected for the first flight was not immediately clear, but he had been receiving treatment with fellow American, Nancy Writebol, who is expected to take a later flight to the U.S.

"Based on our experience, policies, procedures, I have no concern about either my personal health or the health of the other health care workers,"
Ribner said.
