With that little clearance I THINK when you hit it the motor moves back and can take out your transmission pump and damage your thrust bearing. Your motor plates flex some and I think that .125-.180" clearance is to allow for that. https://postimg.cc/gallery/np3zpruo/"Dunning-Kruger Effect" -a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. | Flexplate orientated correctly? I like removing paint from flexplate crank mounting surface as well. Same with bolt face side. |

| ^^^^ On my .090 midplate converter the donut that fits into the back of the crank was lengthened. I believe this was the only difference from standard for me. |

Just to be certain what issue we are talking about, are you saying you have only .030" clearance between converter tabs and plate pads with the converter pushed all the way back into the trans? Or are you saying you still have a .030" gap when you slide the converter forward to mate with the flexplate? As the other guys said, with converter slid all the way back into the trans, you need .125-.180" clearance. THen when you have that, and you slide it forward to mate, the converter tabs should touch the flexplate mating pads, no gap. (If that is the problem, make sure your converter snout is entering the crankshaft bore. Paint, rust, debris, or burrs on either can prevent proper engagement there, and can be easily cleaned up. An incorrect converter (designed for a mid-plate) will not mate up to the flexplate if you don't have a mid-plate.
