How much “in and out” travel should the shifter shaft have on a TH 350? The reason for asking is I have a terrible leak at that spot, and while working on it I noticed some movement. I removed the pan and checked the nut on the end of the shaft and it is tight, so I don’t know what else to do. Thanks for the help Loyd

Is the movement in and out or up and down?

It has a clip on the shaft that holds it in place. Pull the shift shaft and polish it, I chuck it in a drill and use fine paper. Put a new seal in. If the shaft is smooth a little in and out won't matter if the shaft has a groove or pitting replace it.

It is supposed to have clip inside to control in and out movement.

The clip that Eman mentioned stops it from moving in and out. Is there one on the shift shaft? Since you already got the pan down you should just replace the shift shaft and seal. Sonnax has a kit just for this problem... https://www.sonnax.com/parts/4...shift-shaft-seal-kit
