| It has a clip on the shaft that holds it in place. Pull the shift shaft and polish it, I chuck it in a drill and use fine paper. Put a new seal in. If the shaft is smooth a little in and out won't matter if the shaft has a groove or pitting replace it. |

It is in and out.
The clip that Eman mentioned stops it from moving in and out. Is there one on the shift shaft? Since you already got the pan down you should just replace the shift shaft and seal. Sonnax has a kit just for this problem... https://www.sonnax.com/parts/4...shift-shaft-seal-kit |
