That is false. ... former Vice Presidents (unlike former Presidents) do not receve Secret Service protection. Information on rules governing the retirement benefits of members of the federal judicial system can be found here in 28 USC Sec. 627,... Greg Stanley Off the grid and off my rocker!

He did not make it an issue. Not having served in Vietnam does not negate ones ability to criticize those like Al Gore! I disagree if you are attacking his service as you sit in your arm chair. Walk a mile in his shoes first. If a politician exaggerates or lies about the extent of his military service to benefit his political career he is fair game! The posted lies came from your brother. .....I, like any other American, has every right to question a politicians lied about or exaggerated service! Once again, he has not lied or exaggerated about his service, just koski's spin.

The Eco-Hypocrisy of Another Green Advocate; This Time Rolling Stone Owner As NewsBusters noted, in June Rolling Stone published a “green” issue that still didn't please the enviro-left. Well, now Radar Online exposed the magazine's founder and publisher Jann Wenner's not-so-green lifestyle which contrast with his ecological stunts and stances. Radar's July 3 article and July 6 update about Wenner's high-living, carbon-spewing lifestyle which is filled with globe-spanning Gulfstreams, big SUVs, lending his evil Global Warming Inducing Death Plane to high-profile friends (like John Kerry) and staffers ferrying lunches back and forth should really tick the green crowd off. Oh, and he doesn't even recycle. Bad environmentalist, bad! Wenner is reportedly planning to spend his summer jetting between Europe and his vacation home in the Rocky Mountains. How much carbon dioxide would this add up to for, say, just one get-away trip? Let's count. Wenner flies to his son's wedding in Greece and back to New York, then speeds off to Sun Valley, Idaho with his family. Counting just one round trip in each direction, the miles total to about 14,000. Now for the fun eco-math (emphasis mine): Quote: Wenner's Gulfstream jet has an optimal cruising speed of around 493 nautical miles per hour. (That figure, and the ones that follow, are based on calculations for a Gulfstream IIB, Wenner's longtime ride. In fact, according to sources, these days he may fly the slightly larger Gulfstream IV; a Wenner spokesman did not reply to calls for comment.) At that speed, the plane would produce around 80 tons of carbon dioxide during the 20-hour round-trip voyage between New York and Athens, and another 33.6 tons flying between New York and Sun Valley. Fun fact: According to the Environmental Protection Agency's emissions calculator, you'd have to drive a Hummer H3 200,000 miles to generate the same amount of carbon. But it got worse. The update exposed more comical hypocrisy: Quote: Moreover, according to another Wenner source, the Gulfstream isn't his only emissions-intensive vehicle. He also recently purchased a GMC Yukon Denali—an SUV whose fuel efficiency is on par with that of the Hummer—and also keeps a pair of snowmobiles at his place in Sun Valley, Idaho. Snowmobile engines are notoriously dirty, producing as much pollution in a day of use as a typical car does in 100,000 miles. And Wenner isn't much better when he's in town, where he has a chauffeured Mercedes to shuttle him the 15 blocks or so between his apartment and his office. Even more wasteful is his lunch routine: a private chef prepares his meal at home, then staffers drive it down to the office, don black-and-white uniforms, and serve it to him on his personal china. "It's like a scene from Gosford Park," says the source. "He's the original limousine liberal." Employees also blame the scarcity of recycling bins in the office on Wenner's anti-clutter fatwas. Yep. This is who I'm going to listen to when told that I should get rid of my dishwasher and ride the bus? Yet another example of someone pushing the global-warming and environmentalist agenda who doesn't actually follow the "advice" given to others. This is the guy whose magazine linked 9/11 to Bush's environmental policies in the big 40th Anniversary issue and who put out the book, "Rolling Stone Environmental Reader." Like Al Gore, Wenner wants you and I to change lifestyles, but he doesn't want to stop flitting about in private jets and killing Gaia one fun-filled vacation at a time. I guess a cross-country trip in a Prius is too bourgeoisie for him. *Rolling Stone "green" issue photo with Sting via GreenOptions.com L8R, Mike

Ex-presidents to get more protection in post-9/11 era By KEN HERMAN Cox News Service Monday, December 18, 2006 WASHINGTON — In a recent hand-scribbled note, President Bush insisted he is not giving much thought to life after the White House. "Thanks for 'Second Acts' and your very kind letter," he said in a letter to Mark Updegrove, author of a new book about post-presidential life. "I'm not quite ready to take the stage for the 2nd act. After a two-year sprint, then I'll take the lessons of your book to heart." Bush may not be thinking about the next act, but planners are planning for it. And they foresee an unprecedented post-presidency, due largely to the war. The White House sought $5 million in the 2007 budget to begin hiring and training the Secret Service detail that will protect Bush after he leaves office. The money also will be used to protect 2008 presidential candidates. Congress bumped the appropriation up to $16.5 million. "The increase in the budget is for the most part the result of the post-9/11 threat environment," said Joanna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security. "It's expected that the post-presidency protection is going to require significantly more resources." Gonzalez noted that ex-Presidents Clinton and Bush have maintained "very active profiles" since leaving office. "We expect the current president to do the same," she said. Bush has said little about what he plans to do when he heads back to Texas. He has the ranch in Crawford and the Bushes also could establish a home elsewhere, perhaps in Dallas, where Southern Methodist University - Mrs. Bush's alma mater - is a favorite in the contest to house Bush's presidential library. The White House, as usual, declined to talk about security plans. The Secret Service money came through a committee chaired by Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Ky. Planning for unprecedented protection for Bush after he leaves office was a no-brainer, according to Rogers spokesman Jim Pettit. "This is the first president we've had post-9/11," Pettit said. "Given the overall threat environment, there are going to be new concerns." Former Secret Service agent Chuck Vance, who is a former son-in-law of former President Gerald R. Ford, said Bush's post-presidency will include a variety of challenges. "One thing is, he is a relatively young man, and young men are more active and always on the road," said Vance, now a security consultant in Virginia. "That takes a lot of manpower and a lot of team effort." And, Vance noted, Bush will be a target. "He is the only president that invaded a country without provocation and without it being started by the other side. I think he has gained a lot of enmity. ... There are a lot of people who resent this president, both externally and internally, some of whom have lost sons and daughters and had people injured in the war in Iraq," he said. Vance said Secret Service official make security decisions based on "threat levels." "I know this president has been getting a lot of threat letters," he added. "There are a lot of people out there who think very strongly about him in one way or another." Secret Service protection for ex-presidents began after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. At that point, it meant protection for former presidents Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Updegrove said Bess Truman didn't want it, seeing it as an unnecessary intrusion. But President Lyndon B. Johnson talked her into it. In 1994, Congress amended the post-presidency protection rules, deciding to offer Secret Service protection for only 10 years after a president leaves office. Specific threats can spark exceptions to the 10-year rule. Because the change did not take effect until 1997, the current president is the first one entitled to only 10 years of Secret Service protection for himself and his family. "It makes absolutely no sense," Updegrove said of the end of lifetime protection. "Particularly in a world where al-Qaeda is a constant threat. I'm quite certain it was a cost-saving measure." Richard M. Nixon, though entitled to lifetime protection, gave it up in 1985. He died in 1994. Updegrove, like the budgeters, sees a Bush post-presidency unlike any other. His book, "Second Acts: Presidential Lives and Legacies After the White House," examines what life has been like for previous ex-presidents. "My guess is George W. Bush will be more of a target than his more recent predecessor by virtue of the fact that he made some monumental decisions that affected the Middle East," Updegrove said. "He has a lot of enemies in the world." Ex-presidents have been occasional targets for assassins. In 1912, while trying for a comeback as a Bull Moose Party candidate, Theodore Roosevelt was shot as he waited to deliver a Milwaukee speech. The speech saved his life. A manuscript of it in his coat pocket slowed the bullet. Roosevelt, Updegrove noted, was saved "by his own verbosity." In 1993, 17 people were arrested in Kuwait when former President George H.W. Bush made a visit. Authorities said they planned to use a car bomb to kill him. Updegrove looks for Bush, after he leaves office, to find a way to pursue his goal of spreading democracy around the world. "He has talked about establishing a think tank to that end," he said. He said Bush is wise not to talk about what he plans to do after leaving office. "If I were him I would talk very little about my post-presidency until my presidential tenure was very close to its end," he said. "It reinforces the notion that he is a lame duck."
