Here's the number of the bolts I use, AN7-14A. The 7 is for 7/16" diameter, -14 is the length, and the A means the shank is undrilled. A grade 7/16 diameter grade 5 bolt has a minimum tensile strength of 120,000 PSI. AN7 Bolts have a minimum tensile strength of 125,000 PSI. Slightly better than grade 5 bolts. A grade 7/16" diameter grade 8 bolt has a minimum tensile strength of 150,000 PSI. An ARP 8740 converter bolt has a minimum tensile strength of 180,000 PSI. | |||

Welp I can tell you we put as many laps on our stuff as anyone. 200 in a 3 week period on 2 cars. And we're pretty thorough. We had it happen on bolt throughs. Now we had it happen on our bolt togethers after just 25 runs with NO loctite but split lock washers. Take your chances but we pay thousands in entry's and race for TENS of thousands of dollars. The round we lost in Martin was for $100k. I'll use these washers from now on, no loctite, no nylocks, no metal lock nuts. Honestly these were found to use on the bolt together converters where the bolt threads into the converter, BUT after the thought, feel they will be superior on a bolt through application also. I don't hate anyone, we are all here I assume because we are passionate about bracket racing and in all honestly, I don't care what anyone does with their car, their $ and their time. I offer 1st hand experience and advice based on 3 decades of on track proven performance, take it or leave it, makes no difference to me. That said, I've had numerous posters from here come up to me at the track over the years, introduce themselves, offer their hand, tell me they enjoy my replies, my first hand experience and my no BS approach. Not one has approached me yet, talking shyt to me face If and when that day comes, they will quickly find out that I'm much nice on the forums. Pretty easy to confirm those numbers with some quick Googling. Took two searches since I haven’t seen AN bolts on the same chart as SAE. One thing I did see is that AN bolts are less brittle than SAE, so while tensile strength may be lower than Grade 8, the Grade 8 may break first where the AN bolt would bend. Tony Leonard | |||

Scott If your converter bolts are coming loose you obviously have an issue. As I stated before, the contact area of the bolt head and or nut alone is too small for your typical power levels that are common today so the load needs to be spread out. If you use a bolt together converter that's aluminum, that is even worse. A good quality bolt and hardened nut (typical ny-lock nuts are very soft) with hardened washers properly torqued works. Adding a lock washer of any type is a band aid solution. Do you use lock washers on rod bolts, main or head studs? If a bolt is loosening up, there is a reason. | |||
