Is the 7AL3 the older 7230 model or the newer black 7330 model? Have the Zero chips been replaced? If 7230 model, Have you tried grounding the RET 1 – 4 terminals if not using for retard?

I agree that this is a very good analog ignition model. It was re-introduced in November of 2012. Grid was on the market before this.

he also has not swapped the distributor yet.

If the distributor has a pick up unhook crank trigger and try the pick up in distributor. https://postimg.cc/gallery/np3zpruo/ "Dunning-Kruger Effect" -a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. Good call. Don't just swap the wires and make a pass. Check timing, swap pickup wires, check timing again. You want to run the wires in whichever configuration gives you the lowest timing advance. With a digital MSD box, you want the configuration that gives you the highest timing advance. Tony Leonard

The box in it now is the black one I’ve got a red one also. Does it with either box in it. The zero chips are new in the black box and the terminals are grounded also.

No pick up in the distributor

With no pick up in distributor then there is not much to worry about there except cap and rotor. I did have a locking plate on one that was loose and that allowed timing to move a little. You may want to remove rotor and see if it has any play in there. https://postimg.cc/gallery/np3zpruo/ "Dunning-Kruger Effect" -a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. I run the 7AL-2 boxes and have had three failures on them through the years. I think they are pretty good but they are not perfect. Not sure what differences are between 7AL-2 and -3. https://postimg.cc/gallery/np3zpruo/ "Dunning-Kruger Effect" -a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. i agree 100 percent, but reset timing and run car no matter which way it is.when we swapped the wires on on my friends it was supposedly correct the way it was.after swapping the wires it was fixed. honesty is the best policy, insanity is a better deffense 1.036, 6.16@ 224

This is where I believe this polarity problem could occur the most. On analog ignitions like 7al2 , 7al3 or MSD8, these ignitions require you to land the trigger wires on the correct M- / M+ terminals. Sometimes mistakes are made. On the rare occasion, it's possible the sensor could be wired incorrectly. With ignitions that have the mating plug pigtail this could possibly (rare) be wired incorrect. Same goes for the cable connecting the ignition to the trigger. Here's a PATCH CABLE I made to switch polarity of the trigger sensor quickly .

Mark, I don't have a problem, but figured I'd ask for future reference. I run an 8+ with the grid controller, is this considered analog or digital, or both? 272" Spitzer 540 Chevy The Blower Shop XR1 FTI XPM Series Converter FTI Level 6 Powerglide 3.69@199 .916 60' 2017 Bradenton Heads Up Madness Open Outlaw Champ 2018 PDRA T/D #5 2019 PDRA T/D #2 2020 Retired From T/D Competition.... 2020 Bradenton NMCA Hemi Shootout Winner 2021 getting back into bracket racing with a Gen3 Hemi powered 87 Cutlass.

Don't VR sensors' leading and falling edges look considerably different? EFI systems need to know leading or falling edges. Foxtrot Juliet Bravo
