| Yes, you have to engage the PTO for the hydraulics to work on all N series tractors. Are you sure it's an 8N? Plenty of imposters that have been painted with red bellies. Be sure it has a 4 speed transmission and position control works on the hydraulics, 2N and 9N only had up and down and no control in between. https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/ |

| Mine is a '54 800 Model, it has a separate lever that shuts off the hydraulic feed to the lift. I think.
