I'm currently putting together a spare engine with a bunch of parts I've had sitting around and I'm wondering what everyone's preference is for timing chain/gears and front cover. My primary engine has a belt drive but for this spare engine I'm not spending that kind of money. It's a basic BBC, iron block, 605 cubic inch, big duke heads, 16:1 compression, decent sized roller cam with jesel shaft mount rocker system. Let me know what route I need to go please! Thanks

This is a cloyes cover with adjustable button I used in conjunction with a Rollmaster chain. I was pretty pleased with it. The cover flexed a little 002 003 004 so I fabbed a damper stop off the back side of the water pump, hydraulic roller. I may still have the part # on the Rollmaster BBC chain, I'll look. This was for a early 70's muscle car. . ![]() ![]()

I think the part # is Rollmaster CS2020 BBC. This is what they look like. They're nice heavy duty, I ran Rollmaster chain back in the day when the Ripper Nova was BBC. Made in Australia (western civilization), so it isn't china garbage. ![]()

No matter the cover you use, double , triple check for flex. For endplay ![]()

Hey Mike the part number I came up with was CS2040 which is the Gold Series I believe. is it better then the one you mentioned? I believe the one I found has nitrided gears or something.

Could be something new / upgraded. I'm 99% sure I used a CS2020 on this, and back in the day on mine Sir. I got it from Van at Nickels in Tenn. So whatever they carry in stock. I bought them from Van back in the day as well. They're kinda hard to find, but Nickels always seems to have them, in stock.

I had two turn key carb to starter steel headed BBC's in the late 90's early 2000's, I ripped the living day lights out of 40 race season Sunshine Dragstrip, I'm 99.9% positive were 2020 part # Rollmaster. So for that reason I'd be hesitant / resistant on changing to a 2040 part #. Both engines definitely made well over 700hp 427 & 454, that was decent steel headed BBC power back then. Still is steel headed 427 454. I knocked all the teeth off a Manley timing chain set, went to Rollmaster on Vans suggestion, never another problem. ![]()

Just call Alan, they’ve built numerous engines with Rollmaster timing sets and he has the covers too.

I think he should call Van for a better price. JMO ![]()

I'm not telling you not to call SCPC but if you want to look up the part numbers and descriptions you can look here. https://www.lgmrnd.com/category-s/147.htm ____________________________ 2017 and 2018 Osage Casinos Tulsa Raceway Park No-Box Champion 2018 Div4 Goodguys Hammer award winner

I always run the Cloyes 9-3110A chain set and their timing cover which Mike pictured above in my 468s. Replace every 2-3 years when I freshen but haven’t had an issue. Tony Leonard

Not to say a Cloyes 9-3110A isn't a nice unit, but I think this is Cloyes answer for a Rollmaster. I presume this because at the time I knocked the teeth off the Manley set, Cloyes did not offer anything of this caliber, otherwise I'd have probably went this route. Obviously Cloyes is a long standing American company, so that alone would have put them at the top of my list. Buying anything manufactured in western civilization isn't a problem for American jobs though, because the Australians standards of living and wages are the same as ours. So purchasing their products won't put pressure on our standard of living, or wages. It just comes down to preference and experience. ![]()

I just purchased the 9-3100A on my new motor. It is what my builder recommended. He informed me that he has never had a failure on this chain. BG

Do not think that will work for the original poster. That is designed for the Jessel belt drive type system and is just basically a dust and rock cover. https://postimg.cc/gallery/np3zpruo/ "Dunning-Kruger Effect" -a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. I don't run a chain, but if I were, I'd want a cast aluminum cover. They seal better and if you're using a button or bearing on the front of the cam, they won't flex like the steel ones do...
