I've found that to usually be the case.

For what it's worth-
I used 4 gauge from Alt to the rear 4-pole master Cutoff Switch, it is fine on my car with an 80 Amp alternator, does not get warm at all with alternator at full charge. 18 foot wire length.
I used 2/0 battery cable, IMHO it is overkill, and very H-E-A-V-Y. I plan to go with 1/0 on the Camaro.
Tested 2 different gauges of a short (18 inch) Ground cable from trunk-mounted Battery to Frame, and with 4 gauge it got too hot to touch after cranking the engine for three 6-second bursts. went to a 2 gauge, and it got warm after same test. So I went to a 1/0 and tried 3 longer (10 second) cranking bursts, it stayed cold.
This is with a single, new, 900 CCA 12-volt battery at full charge, 13:1 BBC on alky, and East Coast 3 HP mini-starter.

If you're looking at the ARC line then you've already been looking at cheap...both price and quality. I have used it in the past and even recommended it, but too many failures in the past year or so has me doubting them. They have great warranty and service, but just not up to the reliability or even close to the quality of Leash and Speedwire.

The ribbon cable they use is junk. You can tear it with a zip tie and it get hard an brittle over time when exposed to UV...and I've had more than one solder trace burn up in the boards.

I used Trick Cable & Switch years ago and have been very pleased with my switch panel. They have a new mil spec option for their switch panel.

Do you use those? They look slick. Not crazy expensive for that product.

I used the sportsman board on a Top Sportsman car that wanted to keep the switches they had. I found it to be a great deal for the money and well put together.

I'm using a 12" x 12" perforated alum sheet with a bunch of 1/4" holes. No drilling need to mount things and easy to move things as needed.

Road signs are the best aluminum for making panels. Local hwy. dept replaces a lot that are damaged and they will let me have one if I stop there.

I am not going to delete anything in my original post, as I will not hide from mistakes. Calling the ribbon cable "junk" was a poor choice of words.

John from ARC called me yesterday to discuss my above post. Once the conversation cooled down I can tell you I completely understand his product, and marketing better and learned quite a bit. John's a very knowledgeable person with a ton of experience and takes a lot of pride in the product he engineers, builds and sells.

After "my education" here's what I can tell you. yes, you can tear the ribbon cable with wire ties, and the instructions tell you this. So, the cable is not "junk" but care should be taken and instructions followed. John's recommendations, and instruction, is to secure the cable to the cage with tape. My preferred way is to carefully put the ribbon cable in a piece of 3/8" woven loom (Techflex F6) and attach with 3/8 adel clamps.

I have had experience with the cables getting brittle and failing, but no testing has confirmed it was UV. The cables are silicone based o should be UV resistant. My experience nd IMO was that cable failure occurred in the brittle area and that area was exposed to direct sunlight. Putting the cable in F6 as explained above would decrease the chances of this happening.

Here's probably the best part...and we should all wish more companies were like ARC...LIFETIME WARRANTY. Cable goes bad, john will replace it. Board goes bad, John will replace it or repair it. He even told me of many instances where he knew it was not a quality issues or a part failure but a racer induced failure and he still replaced it.

John also took the time to explain the internal circuitry of his switch panels and a few of the items that he has found over the years that causes a "mysterious shut off" that several of my customers have experienced. After hearing this, I can say that I stand corrected, and would recommend his products and services where the application is suitable.

My apologies for not being professional with my wording in my original post.

If I am not mistaken, ARC also has a relay board that is externally triggered with an existing switch panel (positive or negative triggered). Leash, Speeadwire, and ARC all do. If its budget you are after, Amazon sells relays with built in fuse holders...qty 5 for like $25.

I do not have personal experience, but received a call from a shop owner that had experienced issues with MSD Grid. Issues to the point where he took the car to MSD for them to sort out. Dyno time, track time, etc...MSD, through dumb luck, discovered that all the issues were being caused by the use of carbon fiber to mount the grid to. I cant even begin to explain on here how...anyone else ever have bad experiences with carbon?
