Yea I get that, just dont see how that small of a gear change would do that. Has to be another factor contributing plus the tires. Hell maybe your band was slightly slipping with the old trans

Big, I get what you are saying. This new trans has taken over my mind since the get go. The data logs showed I lost some flash stall & changed my fall back rpm on the shift.

See if I can make it work in the $600 buyback round. Wink

Today was the most expensive TnT to date for me. Eek

You'll might not understand why I was worried about the wheelies. Yes, the 1.80 1st gear caused them & changed other things also. I worked very hard on getting very good/consistent reaction times & not using a box. The key was keeping the front tires in the beams & not to wheelie. Wheelies suck for consistent reaction times with our car. The pretty insignificant 1st gear ratio change woke up the wheelies & reactions all over the place.

I made front shock adjustments for the buyback round, it cut the wheelie about in half. Tonight I made another shock adjustment for 1st round tomorrow. Hopefully, it will be close to my refined, wheels on the ground set-up.

This bracket car combo is pretty unique for a competitive bracket combo. I have worked very hard to take a somewhat high power/weight & use 30x9 radials. I wish I could have put on a better showing at the Spring Fling Million.

A small ratio change or small other changes, affects this very finicky combo. I built & own this combo by choice.

Half the field had same results as you. I give everyone there credit for trying. Winning is hard.

The 1.76 -1.80 gearing ratio change (SLR) is insignificant imho. I know little about transmissions, but is it possible that 1.76 was helical and the 1.80 is straight? If yes, more efficient?

When I went from 1.40 to 1.56 planet, I had to reduce launch by 400 rpm and the box delay setting was almost identical.

Good Luck tomorrow….

I’m watching.
Basically you are climbing the ring gear.
The 1.76 worked the tire, the 1.80 added about 38 foot lbs. Mark has a great point too on the gear set. Call you Monday.
Good luck.

I definitely don't need more ft. lbs. of torque.

M & M, the new straight cuts are more efficient than the old helicals.
Hence the reason for quicker: 60's, ETs & the comeback of wheelies.

Hope to have a more detailed wannabe race report in a couple days.

It wasn't pretty but I made it through the 1st round. If I lost, I wasn't going to buyback to make another expensive TnT.

Fern,

I ended up like all the other races, had my head up my butt!

Full race report coming, after I finish digesting all the rotten apples I ate.

Bryan, like Goob said. I don't suppose you remember our conversation a couple of years ago about the reason we race. You yourself said your attitude was upside down. You changed that, you started to have FUN racing again. and it showed in your results, going rounds and winning races like you were doing 30 plus years ago when we first met.I am willing to bet you didnt have 2 seconds of fun out there from the time you pulled in til you got home. I am also willing to bet that the next race you go to you will be back to normal, cause you will be out there to have fun.

That may be, because if I am not going to have fun anymore I am not going. It takes me a longer time to work on the car these days but I do get her done sooner or later. I wanted to go this weekend, past, but since it was going to rain I passed. Its got to be fun

I've always put a lot of pressure on myself when I race. It has helped me with more than my fair share of going rounds/winning races.

As I get older my mental/physical edge is slowly deteriorating. The changing of a new transmission totally short circuited me & I was a wreck within a few days of the Spring Fling. As some of you had seen or read my recent post, it carried forward to the whole event.

It's easy to talk about when you're doing good when racing. I've always been my biggest critic & turn the pointing finger to myself in life & especially when racing.

This is definitely the "BAD" of this thread topic. Like it or not, I'm honest with myself.

I'm all better now! Yesterday's 2nd round loss got me home to spend time with my son, daughter in-law & the most important thing my 16-month-old grandson, Preston or PK for short.

I remember Scott & I resorted back to my old ways (not good); look what it got me. I surely didn't have any FUN!

We have raced together a long time; it has always been a pleasure to know you & your family. Thanks for reminding about FUN, I have been reminding myself FUN first & I didn't do it for this event.

I've been having FUN in S/Pro with no-box. It took me 5 races to figure out a strategy, but I made it to semi-finals on points races #6 & #7. Then limped my way to the 3rd round on #8, with an ill transmission.

Thanks for chiming in Scott, it means a lot!

That's a tough thing to be as prepared as you appeared to be, then have to swap the trans and have it affect your setup like that. My opinion, you did well under those circumstances, especially with the shifting problem you caught early on. I assume distractions dealing with the tranny change had you off your game. Simple distractions at my last race are what led to me breaking my tranny a few weeks ago. Keep up the good work and posting it on here. This middle ager, returning to racing after 20'ish years off, is learning from you and others as well.

I appreciate everyone that followed along with my Spring Fling fiasco. Most of it was self-induced.

I was going to provide a detailed race report but don't want to write a short story.

My main focus was the change of the 1st gear ratio of the new transmission. It did affect how the car reacted & started small wheelies but wasn't the main cause of my turmoil. I looked at & evaluated most of the data.

The main thing that caused the bigger wheelies & quicker 60's were the new rear tires. At first, I thought the track was using a different prep but ruled that out. The new tires were collecting everything under the sun when I was driving to & from the pits; I believe this is my 5th set of these Hoosier 30x9 C30 compound tires. None of the previous same part # tires did this when they were new or used. These extra sticky set of new tires contributed to bigger wheelies & quicker 60's. The previous sets of tires the 60's were in the 1.36-1.37, as were my first four runs of the Fling. I put on the new set of tires after the 4th run while I was fixing the shift shaft nut issue. The 60's dropped to inconsistent times of 1.31 to 1.35 & had one 1.38 that was out of the norm that I was informed I went in deeper when I staged.

Something has changed in the compound or there was a mistake that was made during manufacturing; that's my conclusion. I still have to adjust my front shock setting & shims used in the transbrake switch. Might hold off, I'm going back to my M/T PBRs for the next races.

I have about 2 months off before points races #9 & #10. I'm going to continue racing S/Pro with no-box but might decide to double into Pro for shyts & giggles.

i don't know if it was just me but what i watched it seemed like a lot of good racers struggled up front over the coarse of the week.

but then again the same handful of people went deep and won.

donavan williams put on the best show on the last day except for the main event final with the 0002 mov.

i would like to run one of those races at some point before i age out.

^^^^ Agreed. I too watched much (mostly doorcars) from 3rd rd on after it aired in 3x speed and took notes on those I follow. My analysis….. you have to double, you have to hold and most importantly you have to be great on the tree.

I’d like to attend a Vegas Fling having never raced there. The disadvantage would be not racing for over four winter months coming from the upper Midwest and the 2k mile tow.

BKing ,
bugger of a weekend for you . Sometimes stuff happens . Why did you change tyres mid event ? I have 2 sets , PBR 29.5s and GYear 30x9 . If I am racing a higher end event its PBR slower but totally consistent , Gy for testing or bracket meets . Unless there is a failure though i carry the Gy to all events .
As to stuff happens . I raced @ the Bend 2 weeks ago NDRC event . Some sort of erratic fuel issue cropped up on day 1 swapped pumps , relays fuses doesnt seem fixed ?. Rained so lost Q3 . E1 9am car starts and warms up drives to lanes and up to tower . Then boom no fuel . Cars drive around me shoot . Car then restarts I make it to the box just . Crap burnout then go deep - WHAT ! . Ok lay the tree , no good red . 14 hr drive straight home . Season going to hell , 2 rainouts and this .
Remade fuel pump harness . Still not right psi checking on street . Drain tank to remove . MF#$%@# there is a piece of POR15 tank sealant blocking the outlet , new factory tank with welded on sump . Just a 1 1/2x1 1/2" piece that has peeled off . After maybe 17 years .
Stuff happens and sometimes it sucks .
