That's impressive, I hope all the young guys follow your lead. I wasn't smart enough to start young but...... " The Donald " is helping me make up for lost time.

When the tech bubble went bust I saw my 10 grand investment in a mutual fund eventually drop to under 2 grand in a very short time. Never recovered even after waiting a good while. Continued to invest in mutual funds and saw them take a big drop in the Bad era of 2008. I did move to bond funds before the worst of it and it helped minimize the loss. I manipulated those funds within the same investment company and eventually had nearly tripled in value from the 2008 low. I pulled it all out a couple months ago and banked it. I contributed to my own IRA for at least the past 25 years. I am past retirement age but still work. I feel the market is going to drop significantly at some point and soon. I do not want to watch my $$ vaporize.

My hope is that everyone who has an employer that offers matching funds in a 401k is taking advantage of that. It's free money. Learn to pay yourself first.

I have run into some people who just won't take advantage of that. If they were destitute or something I would get it. But most of them were making and pissing away good money. Why not at least max out the match?

Adjustments do happen. For a typical 401k program, where do you shift investments to to ride out one that ends up significant? I have in the past moved to bond investments during dips. Usually I miss the beginning of dips.

Create an Investment Policy Statement. This is nothing more than a personal document that tells how you are going to invest, why you are going to do it that way, and calls out the target asset allocation. Maintain that asset allocation by periodic rebalancing. Review the IPO and asset allocation annually and adjust based on your age and risk tolerance. Chasing the highs and lows is in most cases a fools game in which the market wins.

Also, consider tax diversity. Traditional 401k is great for the current tax deferment. A ROTH IRA (or 401k if offered) is a great way to hedge the bets of the future tax codes. Contributions are post tax and all contributions and gains can be pulled out tax free after age 59. Contributions can be pulled out at any time, penalty and tax free. In 2018 the Federal Limit for a 401k is 18,500. The limit for an IRA (Roth included) is $5,500.

A great website for information and Q&A is bogleheads.org. It is based on the investment philosophy of Jack Bogle, Vanguard Founder. It is not for the day trader, but is for the long term passive investor (like me). Lots of good info shared there.

Oh Yeah.... Fees matter. There is no reason to pay a front load or 1% AUM when the information is out there to go it alone for .01 - .10%

At the closing bell yesterday:

The DOW: 26,067.94 (the first time the DOW has ever been over 26,000).
The NASDAQ: 7,326
S&P: 2,807

Pelosi and Schumer ridicule Trump’s Economic accomplishments, saying that Obama had a better strategy.

Absolutely. I've been contributing since 1995. 22% gain in 2017, and looking forward to more gains. I think some of the younger folk fail to realize that it's likely that they'll get older. As you reach retirement age, your bills go up, or at least you can bank on it anyway. You want to retire happily, not broke. I know family members who have retired and were dead broke, had nothing to retire on other than aches and pains, and social insecurity.

Also have a 401k and contribute the max. My job pays me commission and I invest the commission bonus monies to retirement every week. It is doing well and I am glad my boss got me started on this stuff way back when, even though I don't really care for him much. He is smart with money and tried to instill into all of us at the time how important it is to invest in your future.

I had my yearly review a month and a half ago and if nothing changes, there should be about $4.35M in my retirement account by time I'm able to retire. That's a ways off but it makes you think about things. But things will most likely change between now and then, so my hopes are not high. Especially if we have another Democrap "elected" to higher office.

The number ONE topic during the last Presidential Election was “Fix the Economy”. In the one year since Trump took Office the DOW has increased more than 6200 points, the largest increase in History. The Democrats want to ignore those facts and would rather focus on Trumps language. In one day MSNBC mentioned the now famous “S&#t hole Nation” comment 195 times, but not one single word about the economy, not one!

A true collection of morons!
