President Obama Signs Law Raising Public Debt Limit from $12.4 Trillion to $14.3 Trillion

Behind closed doors and with no cameras present, President Obama signed into law Friday afternoon the bill raising the public debt limit from $12.394 trillion to $14.294 trillion.

The current national debt is $12.3 trillion. Check out the National Debt Clock, which tells you your share of that -- roughly $40,000 per citizen, $113,000 per taxpayer.

The bill also establishes a statutory Pay-As-You-Go procedure requiring that new non-emergency legislation affecting tax revenue or mandatory spending not increase the Federal deficit – in other words, that any new spending or tax cuts be paid for with new taxes or spending cuts.


Pay-As-You-Go = They spend and we pay.

President Obama kicks off what might be called his "Save the Senate" tour this week, heading west to campaign for two embattled Democrats trailing badly against Republican challengers - including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

With high-profile Democrats already bailing out of re-election campaigns - Sen. Evan Bayh's decision on Monday to drop out of the race in Indiana brings the number of retirees to five - Mr. Obama is putting his popularity and fundraising prowess on the line as he tries to help his party hold the majority in the Senate.

Local Republicans are salivating at the prospect of Mr. Obama dropping into town to campaign for their opponents.

"The hardworking families in Nevada see right through any type of political dog-and-pony shows taking place this week in Las Vegas," said former state Sen. Sue Lowden, a Republican running for Mr. Reid's seat. "No amount of campaign cash will buy back the trust of voters and convince them that he deserves another six years."

Even Democratic strategists say a visit by the president - whose poll numbers have plummeted since taking office - carries risks for his fellow Democrats.

"It's definitely a gamble," said Democratic strategist Liz Chadderdon. "A handshake that raises $1 million now could cost them the election later."

Let me help you get some facts and get off of CNN's lap. Tell me what the deficiet was at teh end of 2000, what it was at teh end of 2006, then what it was at the end of 2008 and then the end of 2009. There are plenty of websites to look it up.

Also, tell me about the recessions that took place between 2000 and 2006. Enlighten everyone on the items that caused the housing market to faulter (the original changes and then the subsequent ones to continue it). Now believe it or not, in there you will actually find area's where Bush is to blame. But let's see what facts you can actually come up with. Typically, when a high-profile foreign dignitary is to meet with the president, photographers and reporters have an opportunity to take pictures and toss a few questions at the president and his guest at the beginning of their Oval Office meeting.

"Government-controlled coverage is not acceptable in societies that promote freedom," said Kathleen Carroll, executive editor of the AP. "And that is why we do not distribute government handouts of events that we believe should be open to the press and therefore the public at large."
