The US hasn't been able to pay any amount against the debt for many years now. In fact we continue, and will continue for the foreseeable future, to run an annual deficient adding to the debt. Do likewise and stop paying any principal on your mortgage, tell the bank you're just going to pay interest until further notice, yet you want to continue to borrow more money, and see if the term bankrupt applies. The fed has been printing free money (they have increased the amount of dollars by 4X) and buying "government backed securities" so we can pay the interest on our debt. Inevitably, at some point, interest rates will rise, they can be manipulated for just so long. What impact will a "normal" 4 to 6% interest rate have on our ability to pay the interest on $19T dollars? Much less pay the actual debt down, which puts us back to bankrupt. So, strictly by definition, I'll concede your point. But sticking your head in the sand and clinging to a technicality won't change our plight. Like I said we are just waiting for the second shoe to hit the floor. It's not my prognostication, history has proven this point time and time again.

I never said it was healthy. I feel that it isn't. I think we ought to be doing a couple things about it that aren't very popular. But default in this country seems to be keep spending money.

Now, just how close we are to reaping what we sow.....I don't know. We said Billions of dollars ago that we were heading for a disaster. China owns us and will force us into labor camps. Total collapse of our economy. Wheelbarrows of money to buy a loaf......and it hasn't happened yet. I thought it would have decades ago. I know I am a broken record, but I don't think there is a thing we can do about it until we have a positive trade balance with all other nations. Once we start exporting something other than our wealth, we can start paying our debts. Until then, the only group that always wins is the extreme wealthy. And really, I don't think they care.
