I have 1969 panel I am working on. Yanking the 3 on the tree. I have a 4l80e thats is in fine shape. Install pretty simple. Have to buy controller for it and seems about grand.

Looking at 700r4 as possibility . Avoid cost of controller, lighter and figure eaiser to rebuild. Think cheaper to hop up.

Engine is mild 489 ci BBC street cam 10:1 carb(efi later_ with edelbrock aluminum heads. Maybe hit 450 to 475 and guessing that a push.

More concerned with it living up to me than the engine. Not know for being easy on anything.

Looks like 700r4 can handle power with some work. Opinions on choice and good or bad points either.

I tend to be hard on my stuff too. If it was my project I would go straight to the 4L80e. It’s a bigger stronger unit to start with. I gave up on 700R4 in my old s10 blazer street truck. A mild 350 small block would eat the 700’s up if I drove it anyway hard. Maybe I just got a bad one I don’t know.

TH400 with a 3.08 gear. Save lots of $$$, go beat the crap out of it, and never worry about breakage. JMHO

Had good and bad with 700r4. Had 84 z-28 with fiarlyhopped up 350 should have made 450 hp. factory transmission I killed and shift sucked. Next was TCi street fighter. Had shift kit and 2400 stall. Only issue was second gear shift. Coud not pull off w/o chirping the tires. I explained to more than one cop.If you can get it into second without barking tires let me know how.

Leaning towards the 4L80E. Sitting here and was running fine when yanked. Just hate putting electronics into the old gal. If go efi as plan later will be doing same I guess so one more piece not big deal.

Sly fox that is option. I want more gear in it than 3.08. Might go as high as 3.42 but like 3.73's. Had set in z/28 with 700r4 and fun as hell at stop lights. Yea almost 60 yo body but with 20 yo foot,LOL Main reason wanting a OD transmission is wanting lower geared rear end.

Was kind of hoping someone talk me into the 700R4 with some reasoning I had not come up with. The 150 plus less weight is about only thing going for it, That and no 900 bucks for controller.

This.

Take care. Tom Worthington

If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.
