Why is the word alcohol used in place of Methanol?

I bought a fuel pump from a manufacture that states “this pump is compatible with: pump gas, race gas, E85, Alcohol and Ethanol.” Does this include methanol? Looked up the definition of methanol and alcohol and it looks like this:

“Methanol and ethanol are both types of alcohol, with methanol also called methyl alcohol or wood alcohol, and ethanol also called ethyl alcohol.

Methanol is the simplest alcohol, consisting of a single carbon atom bonded to a hydroxyl group, with the chemical formula CH3OH. It is commonly known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, or wood spirit because it was historically produced by distilling wood.

Methanol is a primary alcohol, meaning the hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon atom that is bonded to no more than one other carbon.”

When someone says they are running alcohol they mean they’re running methanol? The reason I ask is the fuel pump I recently bought badly corroded within the two months I ran methanol through it. Am I misunderstanding the approved fuels for this pump? I have ran 91 octane gas with no ethanol for the last 20 years so running methanol this season for the first time and it’s a steep learning curve for sure! Your input would be greatly appreciated.

My opinion is that when it says "alcohol" it includes Methanol.

Speaking to a distributor of Methanol there are only a like 3 places that manufacture it. And in the process they filter it thru linen, mostly used for hospital/med beds! As it sterilizes the sheets.

Consequently a few years prior I pulled my fuel filter off my car and there was what looked to be a rats nest of white string like material caked on the filter. I for the life of me wondered how the heck it ever got in there and what exactly it was. Well that solved that mystery.

The distributor when I mentioned my rats nest - he said always, always, always filter the fuel going into your jugs or better yet when going into the jugs and when you pour it into your cell. I do the filter before cell now. Nor do not run any type of filter.

I wonder about what you were told. I use this pre-filter that is really fine and even repels water. I have never seen anything like that caught in the filter.

Let's start with what fuel pump are you buying?

I'm anal about this because I buy street legal pump gas, Sunoco 260 GT 100 UL. I use the funnel prefilter like Curtis at the pump. I've been to 2 different stations that the prefilter plugged up at the start with a water/gel. The one place was pretty consistent junk & I don't bother to go there. I have one station I have used for 20+ years with zero issues. I used to live nearby it but now live about 70 miles away. I have to plan ahead to buy the fuel.

My issue is with an AeroMotive A1000 pump that keeps plugging up the inlet screen. Come to find out the residue is coming from the fuel pump’s motor which is submerged in the tank. Their literature says it’s compatible with alcohol. I was informed by their technician that is compatible if you drain the tank in between races and flush with gas. The first pump is two months old and severely corroded because I did not drain out the methanol between races. They agreed to repair it for free as long as I perform their recommended maintenance routine which was not in the original literature. Who knew???? The big question is who makes an electric fuel pump that is compatible with methanol?
