Dragster parachute location?

I dread asking this here, but if I can get the info before the post goes to shyt that's more important to me than the buffoons' bs...

I was out tinkering on the dragster and got to looking how/where my parachute is mounted....it's at the "normal" 45* angle but it's positioned towards the rearend about 6' forward from the edge of the slicks. Meaning if I moved the chute rearward 6" it would be flush with th od of the slicks. I'm wondering if the chute is being blocked out from getting good air right away? I also have a wing on the car so that may be adding to the issue(s)

The chute has always hit kinda slow and lazy is what has brought this up...and it's really slow and lazy on a 1/8th mile track (virtually wortless).
Anyone ever came across anything like this?

.
Dave

You'll have to look at the Pigley car. It's the only one in the right spot.

Dave here is some pix of mine if it helps. Set up for air launchers but that shouldn't matter, they are mounted in the same place as when I had spring pilot chutes
If you or anyone else is interested I have 2 used Stroud 430 chutes in orange for sale. Chutes are in great shape.

Wow Steve, those are WAAYYYY out in the air !!! From that side photo you posted you can hardly see my chute now. I'm makeing a new mount right now so the back of my chute bag will be even with the outer edge of my tires. Looking at yours I may make it even longer than I was going to. I can easily shorten the mount bars, but it's somewhat difficult to make them longer if I decide to in the future.

Thank You for the photos.....exactly what I was needing to make decisions

I looked at all the websites I could find but none addressed the distance to or past the tire edge.....most referred to the 45* angle but not much else. Lots of doorcar info but not dragsters.
Now looking at dozens of dragster photos I see many, if not most, have the parachute out past the tire edge.
I have to believe it's better to be too far out (within reason of course)than to far down in between the tires as mine is at the moment...I'm out in the shop welding up a new longer mount...Had several 1 foot lengths of aluminum already cut and stacked so why not just do it and be done with it....I mean it would be hard for the chute to open any slower/softer lol....

Had a problem years ago with chute landing in long wheelie bars on B/ED

Dave Uyehara mounted the chute on the wheelie bar, far back - no more problems

Maybe this will help with your decision on how far to mount fyi

Mine is about 28 inches behind cage at shoulder level. And about 12 inches behind back of tire.

Maybe ask some of the chassis builders that build Top Dragsters. They may have some feedback from their customers. Some of them still race fast dragsters and may have some insight.

I have had a lot of different chutes/cars and pull one almost every pass. I think slow opening is more about chute/pilot design and condition.

For instance the Stroud setup with the bag is noticeably slower to me. Also, if the pilot chute gets way beat up it's slower and then there's the spring: Some guys cut a coil off the spring to make it easier to pack, I use one size larger bag than the chute needs for same reason - but you get less pop-out.

I wouldn't worry about your location.

The main reason I put air launchers on was to make it easier to pack. With the spring pilot it takes 2 people, with the launchers I can do it by myself.
Also switching from the Strouds last year to White safety chutes I saved 7 lbs and they hit softer. the Stroud's would try and rip my head off. Both use launcher bags so packing is about the same

Stroud air launcher mounted at the right angle is the only way to fly.
