Now is the time to go to the 139 tooth flexplate. They are MUCH stronger. I do not care what brand 168 tooth plate you run they can break teeth off. You will not have that problem with 139 tooth deal.

I recently went 139. Tried the ati but it would not bolt to my 6 bolt converter. Mezere did. Both seem like nice products. You will have to get a new starter or convert yours if you go 139. But it's a much tougher unit too.

Although you guys are correct about the strength of the 139 deal I believe this rules it out.

The Title says "BEST 168 tooth Flexplate for a SBC"

That makes me think he has had problems and is not afraid to spend money to eliminate the issue.
If you want to ELIMINATE the issue the only way is 139 tooth deal.

Maziere 168 tooth flexplate is $445 at Summit a good 139 tooth is about half that price. But you have to change nose gear and mounting block. Still cheaper and better than any 168 tooth flexplate. IMHO. You can probably do the conversion for about $300 complete.

There are many things we do that are debatable if they really help. But the 139 tooth starter deal is one of those things that really is that much better. On my Altered it is such a pain in the tail to remove motor to change flexplate I want to eliminate problem and do it right ONE time.

I won't argue that it is the BEST way to go. The title also says "168 tooth". You say it's "still cheaper" than any 168 tooth flexplate and it's not. If I were going to spend the money on a Meziere then I would also go the 139 route.

For MOST SBC engines the 168 tooth ATI will suffice for many years so I wouldn't spend the money on the Meziere either. JMO though.

ATI used here, also. Ensure you bolt the flexplate on the right way. Ring gear is larger and offset.
The weight is heavier... between an off the shelf and a JW.

Not for nothing I don't use the cheapest flex plates but definitely not running billet ones either. I've only hurt one flex plate in 25 years and it was because of a starter issue in late rounds with no time to change it.

Just had a guy call today, His bolted on ring gear came off his flexplate. Lucky it srayed contained in the bell housing and knowone got hurt but it did damge his converter. He is now buying a billet Meziere flexplate.

For a SBC 2 piece rear main seal, 168 part number is a FP300. We can recert our flexplate.

I've never knocked a tooth off any flexplate. Mostly, the cert runs out and I just get a new one. I always ran the Pioneer flexplates until the quality took a crap. Now I have an American made ATI, not welded by toddlers.

There's a secret to not knocking the teeth off flexplates.

The next one I buy will be a Meziere.I'm sorry but I'm not happy with the runout on the 139's I've bought. And that's two ibn a row.

The ATI is the best bang for your buck for a 168 tooth wheel....
BUT....one kickback can knock a tooth off any 168 tooth wheel....
A 139 wheel will live when a 168 doesn't...
It's the biggest reason racers switch to the 139 tooth design......

I did and never had a problem with flexplates once I switched...

Big cube engines can be tough on starters/flexplates and if something is not right you'll find the weak spot real quick with zero notice...
