I was analyzing my time slips from this past weekends Summit points race. I made 7 runs & only made 1 all out run during our 2 given time runs.

I questioned myself why I even run the car all out for 1 time run. I should have enough data to stop making all out runs during time runs also. I know why I don't make all out runs during eliminations or very few. Wink

I'm not looking for advice on the topic, but discussion. I know exactly what I'm going to do. I would like to here what you all think about running all out during time hits/runs. I would also like to here from the ones that might run all out during eliminations. I know there's a few left in Bracket Racing.

My theory used to be, if I am running it flat out, I'm screwing up. I should be on the brakes every run during eliminations tightening up the finish line or dumping off my opponent because I can't get there.

I have a hard time judging distance due to my poor vision now. I can barely find the starting line and don't know I have crossed the finish until the win lights come on. It sucks but what can you do.

When I was running strictly pro et, I would dial tight, maybe 1 or 2 under, cause I was never very good driving the top end. I would trust my dial and ran it all out and hoped for the best. When I started running sportsman I had to learn to drive all over again and started holding and driving the top end. Took several races of getting my butt whopped, but finally got the hang of it. By the way, good job Bryan last saturday.

Thanks Scott! I hope you & the family are doing good. We miss you guys at the track.

When I started racing the higher paying bracket races, way back when. I had to learn to use many different strategies/tactics/deceptions. I've always thought my finish line driving was my strongest asset. Now you have to be good at start also & a mean game plan in between the two. I've held some outrageous numbers before just to see if I could make it work.

I debated on where to put this post. Being a "Bracket Talk Forum" there seems to be very little technical discussion about strategies of Bracket Racing. That's why I stuck it here. I'm sorry I was so blunt in my reply to you.

This is the only area where drag racing and round round are similar. people do not like to talk about stratagy ya might give yourself away! I usually start off holding a few and dial closer as the day goes on. But I race box/nobox and run a dragster in the finals where he is allways faster.Dialing hard to try to break them out in the finals. It has worked well for me with a 75% win ratio there. Just not enough finals!

I change things up a bit so I don't mind discussing it...many years ago I was taught to dial tight when running a much faster car and looser if my opponent was a lot slower...I run pro et off the button or foot depending on the event...

These days I hold some...how much depends on how my car is running, how I am hitting the tree, what my opponent dials, etc...

Tom, I know what you’re up against. I have cataracts, very poor depth perception and am older.

As for holding numbers, the last time I raced Mr Underwood we were both flat out and he’s won considerably more than anyone on this thread so far.

I use time trials to test different things quite often. Chassis adjustments, shock adjustments, jetting, timing. I rarely have time to go to a test and tune so I just use them as my own test session. Having buy backs 1st round allows that. Cars are so consistent these days that I'm not sure we even need time trials other than hitting the tree.

I've finally after all these years gotten really consistent on the tree and I don't remember the last time both lanes were green and I had to run all out. That might be because I'm almost always the faster car. High 5.60-5.70s unless I'm running high gear only then high 5.90-6.0s but still rarely spotted.

One big exception to me is when you have to race motorcycles. Even though I spot most of them they get behind you because they leave so soft. Then they come at you with 15mph more speed than most at the same ET. They are hard to judge so I am usually dialed pretty hard against them.

I don't mind telling that I always plan to hold numbers. Plus, my competitors are here also. I'm that comfortable with holding & have many different game plans to go with a good selection of different holds.

Sometimes planning to hold doesn't work out. This happened earlier in the year & is the only time I remember botching the plan! I won the round, but was a little up set at my mistake. I was dialed 10.07 & thought I was holding .02. I ran 10.09 something getting rid of my numbers. I did the run completion & had it figured at 10.078. I was not happy with myself, but it worked out for that round.

Well that seems to have worked.Usually by telling people they dont want to do something they usually do it.My game at the track always changes.Six track championships a et finals win and a few medium sized money wins arent a bad record.Good luck to all no matter what your game is.Just remember they are not driving your car and it doesnt matter who they are.

Fuzzy,

To me dialing tight is holding .01 - .03. I'm not sure who or where, but a drag racing school/person doesn't recommend holding the smaller amounts. Holding .01 or .02 will get you into trouble. Wish I could find it, I thought it was on DRR. Anyway, I haven't found it to be an issue.

I pretty much follow your example.

Our points races don't have buybacks. Like you I use times runs to test/work on strategy. I also do strategy testing in eliminations. We mainly run 1/4 mile, but I work on 1/8 mile strategy during 1/4 mile time runs/eliminations. It gives a different look to the race.

As for my lights, I wish I could say the same as you. I have decently competitive lights & buckle down the further into eliminations or key races. I'm working on trying to get them better in early rounds. I like pressure & usually succeed the more there is.

Here's a slip from the finals this past weekend. My opponent had already won in Sportsman & was trying to win in Pro; very accomplished racer!
