Is there a location preference for the hand brake ?
forward or reward of the axle ?

If it is rear of the axle, I think you'd have a hard time reaching it with properly-adjusted arm restraints.

Seriously though, I don't think the caliper cares where it is. My Moser M9 9" housing has the caliper mounted toward the front of the car on one side, and toward the rear of the car on the other side.

When I added mine, the foot calipers were already in the front so I put the hand brake set in the rear just for simplicity of install.

I don't think it really matters, do whatever is easiest

Guessing nobody runs just one caliper for hand brake. I know only dragging on one side but with spool there is no difference. Should say none that I can see. sure if someone see ther wise they will sat so'

I am thinking of one just for top end with zero chance pof locking them down.

As for op question . I agree caliper has no idea where it is on 360* except for when bleeding brakes.
