  | A deeper gear will get you off the line quicker and with those big tires you still shouldn't overpower the tires with the increased torque. I run 4.86 gears in my car and run 1/4 mile. |

  | If not going to 1/4 mile anytime then its maybe worth change for little ET. If going to ru n some 1/4 stuff(10%) and don't want any extra rpm then I would say a lot of trouble for little gain. That said the rpm gain over 4.30 in 1/4 would not be huge IMO. Go to wallace calculator and run numbers and see if you like answers. I know on little brothers dragster we went from 4.30 to a 4.86 gear and got very little to nothing for it. Thats 5.20 hardtail dragster. If you are bracket racing and its consistent ,why would you change it or thats the question I have always heard.

  | But changing gears can affect the way a lot of other things work. ET calculators said my car would run better with 4.56 gears. I swapped in some 4.57 and it was a slug. Converter stall was all wrong. Went back to 4.86 and the car loved them. If I put in the 4.57 and a different stall speed converter, the car might have run quicker. With my current combination of parts, my shift light comes on just before I cross the finish line. To me, that's running as close to perfect with how I currently run the car. If I wanted a higher or lower shift point, then other changes would have to be made to make everything work together. I have also considered going to 5.00 gears just to get my shift point a little higher. |
