looking for recommendations for a sealer for the rubber end seals on a SBC. Never had problems before using a thin amount behind the seal. On the last one I did pan installed while engine upside down on stand and not filled with oil for days after. I use Permatex Ultra Gray and both ends of the pan leak. I've read where others have had problems with Ultra Gray too.
Any suggestions on a sealer?

I use right stuff....I don't use the end seals on my block either. Seal groove in rear main gets filled and let dry, cut off excess with razor blade. Then bead around pan rail....

Right Stuff is awesome for intake end rails, but everything else gets Ultra Grey in my opinion,

I always used Ultra Gray but for some reason it didn't work out well on this pan gasket. It actually fell right off of the rubber end seals. Looking at the Permatex site only Ultra Black is listed as oil resistant.

How do you all feel about Reinzosil Universal RTV Silicone Gasket Maker? I have no experience with it but it sounds like it could work in this situation. Just looking for experience with it.

Wow didn't know that. I run a BB Mopar and have used it to seal the heads to the valley cover and the rear main seal retainer for years and never had a leak. I know what they say but it has to be oil resistant. I put a skim coat on the rubber seal halves too and never had any problems.

Tell you how good that stuff is......I had trouble with my intake gaskets sliding on my engine. Intake fit it perfect. Tried all sorts of gaskets and things for years and finally out of desperation I put a thin coating of Ultra Grey on them. Have not moved since. And I run gas and alky to boot.

I thought about trying Hylomar but the ultra grey trick lasted 3 years. Don't have any sealing problems they just move. Ultra Gray is almost an adhesive as much as it is a sealant.

Weird.
I only use the 4-piece sets and have never had leaks.
Original GM, or quality timing covers and oil pans only require the tiny dab at the joint of the end seals to rail gaskets.
When I do use silicone, it's high temp Red.

I tried the one piece Fel-Pro piece of crap, once.

went to the parts store today, looked at the Ultra Black and Ultra Gray. Ultra Black has it printed on the package oil resistant. Ultra Gray doesn't have that or state anything about oil.

It’s funny, I have used the same one piece Fel-Pro since 2008. I don’t know how many times I have pulled it apart and back together using the same one. Only on my aluminum pan that doesn’t use a gasket for one year did I not use it. I won’t use anything else if the pan uses a gasket.
