Are electric power disconnects legal as a means of total power disconnection on race cars? I'm talking something similar to an RV where you can turn the power on and off with the push of a button and not have the cables and mechanical switch. Kevin
I am also looking for something that doesn't need the large external switch. My Cutlass doesn't really have a good place for it and not have to chop into my rear bumper.
Mount where ever you need and just drill a hole. No need to cut up anything.

I've never been given a hard time at a few tracks with strict tech. The push off switch in the back kills the car.
I use cole hersee solenoids, Curtis used trombetta. Solid state battery disconnects are we way to go but expensiveThis message has been edited. Last edited by: SP 124X,

Denis is correct on mine. Here on page 3 shows the way I did it. I love my set up. It worked extremely well all year.

I do not know any pulling close to 750 Amps but most are pulling more than the 30 some of the mechanical are rated for.

Mine is rated at 200 and more than covers anything I need. 500 would definitely be safe.

The Cole Heerse 200 AMP is complete acceptable. It will easily tolerate starter draw AMP.
I use two cutoff switches, one in the rear that remains "on" during the race day, and one in reach of the driver that can be turned on and off as wanted. I usually turn the drivers switch off while charging the battery.

Same thing better price.. I assume these are continous duty. Is there a way to wire them that allows you to turn them on/off from two switches. Not turn main swith on and leave it then second switch interupts the main one. (does that make sense?) I am electronics illiterate..

Another question on the electrical cut off. Can it be left on all day like I do the mechanical one? It doesn't get hot?

I believe you won't have a problem. It's just a battery isolator. The fleet I work on have them installed in their vans and they run all day. I am just starting to replace some in the vans that were built in 2015. They will get very hot when they short out.

David, just remember that you have an electrical draw while they are on. I don't want mine on all day. I turn it on when I get in and off before I get out. That's why I have one of the switches in the ****pit.

On my Altered I have the mechanical switch is on the back which I leave on all day at the races. I also have an electrical switch that I use to kill power from inside the car. My electrical switch is a Cole Hersee?? and I think I am going to change it out to higher power one like above.

Dave, it is a 100% duty cycle relay but it does get hot and does have some draw [maybe 2 amps] so I turn it off when the car is parked.

But will these isolator solenoid switch coils handle 16 volts or up to 18.5 volts when running an alternator and live long term?
