Radial Ghost Wrinkles

This past race at Barona, someone asked me about my faint wrinkle pattern showing on my radials. I have been noticing them basically since the ProCharger build. I call them ghost wrinkles & they faintly show around the circumference of the sidewalls at rest. The person said I must really be wrinkling the sidewall at the hit.

I'm not too worried about the ghost wrinkles. In videos & pictures at the launch the sidewall only shows 3 small wrinkles at the hit. While it has been some time since running bias ply slicks; I don't remember seeing ghost wrinkles. Has anyone seen these on their slicks be it bias ply or radials?

I have the stiff sidewall bias Micky's and don't see any ghost wrinkles, but I do run a fair amount of tire pressure.

The videos we take show very little tire distortion. According to the data recorder they "Dead hook" when I lower the launch RPM below 4600. Can't do that on a .400 Pro light, it hurts the RT. Approaching, or above 5400 I need to lower the tire pressure, make a small shock adjustment and carry some delay.

Hope this information is valuable Bryan.

The ghost wrinkles appear in certain lighting conditions. I'll have to start carrying my phone & see if I can get a picture.

I have new radials mounted now & I don't know how long they take to appear. Plus, I'll have to remember to post the pics up. Not that anyone cares & I'm not too worried about them.

Good to know that I or the one guy that commented on them are not seeing imaginary wrinkles. Need a picture or they're not there!

This is a leave picture at Barona as you can see not much for wrinkles & I was running 19.5 lbs. of air pressure.

I'm a one man show & pics/vids come from others. I only witness the ghost/shadow wrinkles when the car is at rest in certain light conditions. The wrinkles show around the complete circumference of the sidewall.

I’m 21-23 @ 3600# and it still gets them.
You are pretty much pooched too so I bet it’s wadded up hard out there a bit when boost comes in.

Barry,

On the 2-step I was making 5 lbs. of boost & the converter flash at 5,750 rpm it makes 11 lbs. of boost. I do have a pic about 30' out & tire looks about the same. I'm only making 15 lbs. of boost peak on the run with this tune.

I have run 20 lbs. of air pressure with this combo. I think I lowered it to take bite away when I was calming down the wheelie monster!
