Tom,

Thanks for your response.

So IFR3 does not make anything either? If he is going to call Sunoco out...It kinda makes the fellow obligated to tell us all the facts as he knows them instead of just the facts he wants us to hear doesn't it?

I mean if you call Sunoco out, why not at least tell who you are and who makes what if you clearly know the facts?

Just as I am sure no other re-sellers of alcohol want you to know where they get the raw methanol before they add their blends to call it their own.

I used to work for him, I cleaned drums, helped off load tankers and delivered the stuff.

What is blended into methanol?

some lube and mostly dyes, water content and the way its filtered

Over the years, I've used clear, blue, green and red alcohol from various manfacturers with different levels of top lube in them.

Pour some of your fuel on a piece of clean aluminum and let the alcohol evaporate, you will see just how much top lube is in your fuel. If the aluminum is still clean, not much lube in it probably more dyes than anything.

So how much does race gas cost and what determines the octane needed?

My fuel consumption on Methanol is approx. 1.6 times the amount of race gas I had been burning, (60% increase in consumption).
Alky prices here in N. TX run about $3 per gallon (or less) if you buy a drum, and unless you get extorted by a VP dealer, even buying it by the 5 Gal jug at a local track it is never over $4.
I haven't priced race gas in about 5 years, but it had gotten stupid expensive back then, which was one of several reasons why I switched to alcohol. Even if I were using twice as much of it as gas, the cost of race gas was 4x what Methanol cost. Probably still in that range, and not even talking the exotic VP stuff either. How much is plain old 110 or 112 octane race gas these days?

I need to correct my earlier post. I'm told there are 5 to 6 true manufacturers and they vary from re-purposed to industrial grade and up to medical grade.

We have run everything from VP, Sunoco and even the commercial stuff that is bought for the winter in the oilfield gas pipes. No difference in all of them other than cost.
