We supply a 40/60 amp (40 continuous, 60 momentary) sealed relay with ours. Not sure our competitors is that high.

We also sell the relay individually if anyone needs an upgrade or a spare.

This is the one we include with our solenoids. Could have used a cheaper one, but this one is what you need.

My question is, “Is the Relay Failed”??

Take your multimeter set to ohms and put the leads together, it should read 0 ohms. Take the shift relay and meter in ohms across the #30 and #87 terminals. It should read infinity. If it reads any ohm value the contacts are probably welded together. Meter the # 85 and #86 terminals, it should read anywhere from 60 to 100 ohms.

If the relay is not failed, on your 7al3 ignition box, meter from the RAS terminal to the Ground terminal. It should read infinity. If you have any ohm reading I suggest calling MSD explaining the problem and for advice on what to do next.

For relay replacement that one from Scott would be very good, or I suggest trying a Bosch 0332209138 relay that is 50 amp rated.

Is the power to the relay #30 terminal fused? If yes, what ampacity fuse?

Scott, can you tell me what the plunger travel is on your solenoids is?

Order direct or thu Summit or Jegs

Sorry didn't see this question earlier.

On the solenoid through you can achieve .950 - 1.300 with adjustment of the end bumper on the shaft.

Wouldn't the travel be fixed? If you measured the plunger sticking out the back static and then engaged that is the travel and it won't change.

No - you can adjust the jam nut on the bumper up or down / in or out - to allow the plunger to fall back into the housing more or stick out of the housing more, giving it more or less travel.

Hope this makes sense, but that's how it would work.

It does make sense. Mine just doesn't have that adjust-ability so I thought I would ask.

Scott or anyone else for that matter, is there any issue using the relay on the K&R relay board, dont know what it is rated at off hand. This is a new build I am working on, I have used air to shift with for years, this will be my first electric shift solenoid in a very long time. I will be using one of Scotts solenoids. It will be shifted on time only thru the delay box so I have control on how long it is on for.

My guess would be no, you can't use the relay in the K&R board, well not for long anyway. Not without knowing the amp rating of that relay. Those electric solenoids pull a lot of amps when first energized.

You can however use the K&R relay to trigger an external relay like the one pictured. Not really helpful as it adds another failure point or even a very small delay in activation of the shift solenoid.

Tim, there is a side note on the K&R schematic about wiring a shift solenoid like Scotts.

Call K&R !! My “guess” is the board supports that electric shift coil using the correct board terminal.

The shift relay on the latest K&R relay board is rated at 40amp closing and 30amp opening. Foot note on the drawing just says use #10 wire for electric solenoid and #14 for spring type. The board has a 30amp fuse for shifter

I use the K&R relay board to shift my Biondo electric solenoid with no issues. I do see an approximate 1.5 voltage drop in my Racepak when the solenoid is energized.

Replace the 30 amp fuse with a 40, set the Delay box timer for 0.300 output and you should be good.

as per kevin at k&r, do not use his board to trigger an electric shifter. these solenoids can pull up to 55 amps and the relays are not rated that high. i did however, use the electric shifter terminal on the board to tied to an 8950 msd switch, which triggers the drs 40/60 relay. it is a very recent install and works great

RPM activated switches are good for turning on lower powered devices (lights, air or spring loaded shifters) but are a poor choice imho if you attain the shift rpm in the burnout box or in Hi gear using an electric shift coil.

For about the same cost as an MSD 8950 and the needed chips, I suggest looking at an RPM switch with a Programmable Shift Pulse Time like Digital Delays Elite RPM Switch. It’s programmable for number of shifts and has a test mode.

The relay (CB1a-P-12v) used on the DD Elite RPM switch is 40amp. When I spoke directly to DD last week, he said a stand alone relay is not required with his switch panel using the biondo elec solenoid.
