Has anyone ever seen or heard about anyone modifying a funny car cage to go with a swing out bar? I have an idea for one that has potential to have a really cool look and more importantly be very safe. Just thinking out loud.

Swingout door bars are only legal for 8.50 and slower. There is not an SFI cert that allows for a swingout.

So that's around 5.45 in the 1/8 mile and the old girl currently runs 6.10 ish so that is plenty of cushion to evolve and still be (slow enough) Want to make the car easier to get in and out as I'm not getting more limber.

Never been certified, it's a Chassis Engineering eliminator x mild steel chassis with funny car cage and additional x bracing in the cage area and tail section.

If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

NHRA 8.50 to 9.99 (5.35 to 6.39) needs to be certified and a swingout bar is permitted in OEM full-bodied entires.

IHRA is 9.00 and faster (6.0 in the 1/8) must be certified and a swing out door bar is also allowed on OEM full-bodied entries 8.50 and slower.

WDRA is also 9.0 and faster (6.0 in the 1/8) swing out are allowed on OEm full-bodied cars running 8.50 and slower.

a swing out bar with a funny cage cage is illegal no matter what ET you run but only IF the chassis has been certified and only IF there was any tech.

But still much more than fast enough for the purpose (bracket racing). Smile And yes, 8.50 in the 1/8 would be a very impressive pedal powered tricycle. Eek Take care. Tom Worthington

I just messaged Larry Wiggins Jr (NHRA) and John Vogel (IHRA) and both said you can certify a funny car cage with swingouts at 8.50 and slower.

funny car type cage is not a requirment at an 8.50 cert so it is an add on for safety has no effect on function of a swingout as I said call your div. director for a clarification dont ask here you will only get Ed no heads opinion which is always B.S.

Meanwhile a roll bar is not a requirement when running slower than 11.50, it is an add on for safety but once you do, a harness is required too.

Larry Wiggins does NHRA chassis certs.

John Vogel does IHRA chassis certs.

They should know since that is exactly what they do, certify chassis.
