The real problem with metal defectors is just like going through them at a ball park or concert...there will be a back up with kids lined up in the corral which will be a target rich environment that will be easy pickings from a distance, and the shooter does not need to be in the building.

It is hard no matter how you look at it.

Maybe if they got rid of the diversity departments and other non-teaching positions they could afford real security.

Plus what do you do about the dozen or so fire exits? All they need is a buddy to let them in and all the security was a fail.

seems to work pretty good at airports, baseball games, court houses, banks, and the list goes on. So why not schools? Nothing is 100% but its better than nothing. When wife was in nursing home with a "No Weapons Allowed" sign at the front door I carried my concealed in there every night. Why?, because at another facility near me a deranged man had walked in and killed 6 old disabled people before a young man with a gun shot him and stopped the carnage. You all can be as politically correct and cautious as you wish but but if you have any balls you got to stand up. Don't put a coward at the door either.

Fern, some of my buddies live by the saying they would rather be judged by 12 rather than carried by 6. There are a LOT of people in NJ that carry without permits because they value their life and the lives of innocent people around them more than their fear of being caught. I don't have the ballz to do it, too much too lose, but trying my best to get out of this state to have the option of carrying if I should feel the need to, legally.

The solution for school shootings will come in less than a month, school will be closed for summer. By the time they reopen this will all be forgotten by the many as they worry more about money and illegal aliens.

I don't think anyone likes the idea of turning our schools into prisons....but...this is the world we live in, sadly...the bottom line is we need to protect our kids...no gun law, new or old will stop criminals or disturbed individuals...they are not exactly concerned with the rule of law...

Minimum entrance points with metal detectors manned by armed guards...use retired military or LEO's for that function...offer the conceal carry option to teachers with special training required...fire exit doors with alarms...bullet proof class room doors with strong locks...

This is not rocket science, folks...we need to protect our school kids...the liberals answer is nothing more than feel good nonsense...more gun laws will not do anything to stop this problem...if it would, I would be all for it...

If all those advocates of gun bans, new laws and even confiscation really want to protect our kids they need to stop their protests and foolishness and get behind serious measures which will do some good...rant off...

We gotta figure out what is really important to spend the taxes already collected. How about we drop some of the stupid crap we spend on currently and improve our schools in areas of safety and effectiveness? I think we could sit down and come up with a dozen things to stop spending on that could pay for these improvements many times over. How about we simply shrink our government by 10% and start there?

Not all forgotten here...……………..

Police seize first firearms under Florida's new gun-control laws

A Broward County judge on Friday issued the state’s first order temporarily removing guns from a person under Florida’s new gun-control laws.

The man told officers he “was being targeted and burglarized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a neighbor who lives in [his] building,” the judge wrote in his order. “[He] could not describe the neighbor but stated that the neighbor [can] ‘shape shift, he can change heights and I’m not sure where he comes from’ and ‘to be honest, he looks like Osama Bin Laden.’”

He also told officers that he had to turn off the electrical breakers because “they are electrocuting me through my legs.”

The man was also taken to a hospital for involuntary psychiatric treatment under the state’s Baker Act. But the civil ruling removing his access to guns and ammunition was granted under the new legislation — which permits confiscating guns from people who have not been committed but are deemed a potential risk to themselves or others, according to the order signed by Broward’s Chief Judge Jack Tuter.

Metal detectors aren't really an option where I teach. We have a three building campus that two of those buildings have only one main "entrance", but my building has 12 garage doors and 16 separate "entrance" doors. Its just not an option to work with all the doors closed and metal detectors on all the entrance doors. We are currently under construction to start using a card swiping system on entry doors, but these kids can't remember to tie their shoes, so I know they will certainly lose the "cards" within a week or two.

This entire school shooting epidemic has got me seriously worried, with the current liberal / politically correct mindset there is no fix .............

Slippery slope......... I know someone that had his guns confiscated because HE got a restraining order against HIS WIFE! They came and took the guns since she had access to them, he was not home when they removed the guns from the house. He goes to get them back at a later date after all was ok between him and his wife and guess what, the guns were destroyed by the police department! He got an I'm sorry from them, that was all!

So, if peoples guns are going to be confiscated, they should certainly be kept where that person can get them in the future if they are allowed to, or a relative that can own firearms can get them.

The gubberment is too far reaching in far too many areas!

And back to the school thing.... I was driving by a school today which is right off a major highway, not my town, one over. About 20 kids out there with their teacher cleaning up outside, nice thing to do. But, if some nut job wanted to cause havoc, they could pull over onto the shoulder, fire-away, and get right back on that highway and they are gone in a flash! How do you possibly prepare for that. Frown

Its a D(-)M shame! Armed security and fenced Schools. You will be checked and have explosives sniffing dogs. Spend some of the money they are giving away HERE on this!! Start holding parents accountable!! Better parenting!!

great idea but this does not address shootings on the outside of schools and there are no specific ways to stop someone that has the desire to harm people ...it is that simple .

There are roughly 250,000 schools (all levels) in America. How do you propose to pay for all the metal detectors, security cameras, extra fencing, armed security guards, etc.? I can see it costing three billion dollars per year or more ($10,000+/school). Is it maximum security for every school and cost be damned?Good luck with that.
And still, a determined killer will scale the fence, ignore the metal detector and cameras, shoot the guard and kill as many as he can.
In the latest school shooting there were no "red flags", prior warnings, scary guns, semi-autos, etc.
Maybe Israel comes as close as you realistically can to a solution- the teachers are armed and trained and it should be mandatory.

Why don't we just get all the kids their own personal bodyguards? They could wear flack jackets etc and be escorted everywhere on the taxpayers' dime. Safe until graduation except for missiles. We can deal with that too. But then we will need to protect them at college too. And at their first jobs. Half of the workforce can protect the other half.

A lot of good ideas here but they all cost money and guess who pays for it? Plus as we give the Government more power and money to "Protect us" we are also making the Government bigger, more powerful and more expensive. That price is more than just money it is taking away some of our freedoms a little bit at a time.

I for one think the Government is too big and overreaching right now as it is and we can not afford them. I prefer to have the people have the power and not Big Brother.

One other thing and I do not want to sound cold but when you look at 350 MILLION people in America and there was 56 school shootings the odds are very low. Should we try to do something to protect the children? Yes, but lets not get crazy here. Probably 10 times more children get killed walking to school yet no screaming from the media about it. Why? Does not fit their agenda.

"Gun Free Zones"? Well that right there tells them they can walk in there and do what they want and it will be a while before anyone can do anything about it. Why don't they walk into a police station to do it? Because they know they will get shot and quickly.

I also think the media has something to do with it. Remember when John Lennon got killed? That pile of excrement did it because he KNEW it would put him in the History books. He did not do it because he hated John Lennon, he liked him. He did it for publicity. The media gave him all kinds of publicity.

Violent games are a part of the problem. Kids play games where the object is to kill as many as possible and these games are very graphic now. What could possibly go wrong?

There is no one solid reason for all of these things and there is not one quick easy answer. But there are many things that you need to look at and you also need to understand that no matter what we do some bad things will still happen.

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.
