I took a ride with a friend of mine in his MH to pickup an enclosed trailer w racecar at his friends business in VA to go race at Piedmont. Plan was drive to VA, sleep and grab trailer in the morning in the daylight.

Well, around 3Am woke up to what sounded like a freight train going through the MH! Sure enough, there was RR tracks a few hundred feet away as it in an industrial area. Didn't know it until the sun came up.

Story doesn't really pertain to the subject but thought it was a good story.

One thing about overnight Walmart parking, not all allow it. The one closest to me doesn't allow it. I think that's more suited towards mid-america.

We use RV trip wizard as it has pictures and descriptions of the campgrounds along the way so you'll know if they are big rig friendly. Most KOA's save pull thru spots for folks passing thru but they are usually booked up the weekend.

Thanks everyone for the tips!

I wanted to add one, for the military guys/gals & retirees. You can use FAMCAMP's (family camping) on military bases that have them. I forgot all about them, because I spent very little time on military installations.

This will be my first stop if I decide to haul the race car back. It's about 890 miles & I'll probably stay 2 nights.

San Diego to Lake Charles then Eunice, Louisiana then back to San Diego (3342 miles). Left here Thursday late afternoon with three drivers, got back at 3:00 am Sunday morning, towing a 32 foot trailer. Never stopped except to pick up a dragster (Lake Charles, La.) and fuel.

B KING Traveling and needing a place to park with motorhome and trailer can be a pain. Most all the truck stops fill up quick starting at about 7:00 pm. What I have been doing is planning the trip and driving at night. Then in the morning the truck stops start emptying out at around 6:00-7:00am. Then they seen to stay empty until the next 7:00 pm. If you can sleep during the day it works.

vetman- those were the days buddy!!!! lots of hours in a weekend!! (so they say, LOL!)
BKing- I know Justin would have no problem letting you stay a few days at CFMP, Tri_state, just down Hwy 20 about 90 minutes has a big bucks race June 10-11, couple $5Ks I think. They actually have a campground with hookups on track property. All sorts of options in Iowa and western Illinois this summer.

One more thing. We have done a LOT of motorhome traveling across the Country.
Our overnight choices in this order:
Walmart, we like the smaller town stores.

Loves truck stops or Flying J. (parking can be difficult if looking for pull-through in evening)

Lowes or Home Depot: we arrive after store hours and usually leave before they open but all have had huge parking lots.

We use Google Earth app on phone to get an "overhead view" of planned stops. If it looks dicey, keep looking ahead of time.

Safe travels,

Jok

Travel is enough of a pain in the rear for me that we rarely do it. If I were retired it would be great. Travel and stop and make reasonable days out of it. But with all three in the family having work responsibilities, we end up taking off after work, traveling to whatever we can find, which is never a truck stop or rest area anymore. It's better now that we have two drivers. But we end up arriving exhausted and rushed. The local racing is pretty good now. So we mostly do that. If you could work it out to hit koa's etc it would be great. I never sleep well at wal marts for obvious reasons. I don't trust 2/3rds of the truckers these days either.

Travel only related, not racing. Since Covid we have traveled 20,000 + miles in the Eastern US in our motor home. Some with the race car but most without. Not that I preferred it but on occasion we have stayed in Wal Marts, Cracker Barrels, truck stops, rest areas, on the road shoulder, and the list goes on. Not one time have we ever had a problem, none. I prefer to stay in private camp grounds or resorts. We just returned from Myrtle Beach, SC. So much to see in this country and all these years racing I was just driving by. Just load up and go, there is always somewhere to park and rest. As always stay safe.

Jok,

I pre-registered this morning for the 2 $5Ks at Tri-State, are you going to this race?

Again, thanks everyone for all suggestions!

The trip is somewhat penciled in & it's all depending on my Dads health issues. 1st leg of the trip, just under 900 miles to F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY & stay for 2 nights. 2 leg, Tri-State Raceway for a 2 or 3 night stay with some racing. Last leg, hop, skip & jump to MI. Will probably do something similar on the way back & race at Cedar Falls Motorsports Park for the stop in IA.

I got back earlier this evening from my last trip to spend time with my Dad before he passed. He was more worried about my racing plans this year than his own issues. I assured him my racing was/is the least of my priorities this year.

2BKING, RIP Dad!

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

any big parking lot just off interstates..Home depot's, Lowes, etc. I have NEVER been asked to leave anywhere I have parked. Some common sense must be used obviously when doing this.
