I feel with class racing racing on the decline (at least as far as spectators are concerned), tracks are searching for more ways to bring in fans, keep racers happy/busy, and make class racing more exciting. In Ohio, we have a monthly event called Cincy Street Nights. A few index classes on a marginal surface as well as some small tire classes with fairly loose rules. All of it starts on instant green with AutoStart (little randomization). Could this be the way of the future for some outlaw class racing? Would you guys participate if it was the only racing going on? Just curious for some other thoughts/opinions.

If your talking heads up fine,now bracket racing it would be terrible,it would give the advantage to hard leaving cars ,slow cars would be a disadvantage in with slower reaction times.Also faster cars could figure out the math and use their delay box and leave on the slower cars green lite,you would have to blind the whole tree,or green lite ,but even then the harder leaving cars reaction times would be a big advantage bad ideal in bracket racing ,Heads up is a different story.

Instant Green, with clock start on Green , could easily be used to bracket race, putting the absolute premium on consistency of both car and driver, while removing any fast car / slow car advantages or disparities. No need for delays or crossovers.

See Green, launch, trip finish line. The ET is your combined driver reaction time, vehicle reaction time, and the actual vehicle performance. Totally blinded tree.
You want to see the Green and let go on a delay? Go ahead, just add the numbers to your dial.

Let's say your time slip comes up 7.02 in
your car that normally runs 6.50.
You have .2xx for driver reaction, .3xx for vehicle reaction, plus the actual trip.

Can you really repeat? Dial it 7.02 if you feel lucky, me, I'd dial it 7.00 and go at it.

It's package racing in a different way, more like the good old days when all you got was a paper ticket with a W or L on it, with an ET and MPH

I'd think it would be a fun wrinkle.

Another benefit of that format is every race is decided on the finish line ,, what i mean is there is no red lights ,
You could forget the instant green and just start the clock on the green light , that would make it easier for everyone to understand

I have run instant green (heads up), and with the timing system at the track I was running on, a redlight was indeed impossible. The other guy would get the win, but no redlight would be displayed. Also, I got no data at all. No ET, no RT, no nothing, because I had fully cleared the beams before the tree activated. I learned to slow it down a bit, and then I was crushing the RTs in the other lane, even though I was much slower leaving... to the tune of 6 tenths in RT differential. Yes, if the tree was activated randomly, I'd be toast. Take care. Tom Worthington


If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

I don’t like that there is no real penalty to being late on the tree. You could still spray your way back to a legitimately perfect run.

I have been running.500 pro tree for the past 3 years foot braking. I figured out how to cut a light with a little practice. I'm not a fan of instant green. I like a little warning before the green. Foot braking on the pro tree helped me on the sportsman tree.

About 40 years ago there was a ADRA Index race at Palmdale using a .300 Pro Light, it might as well been an instant green everyone was diving in as deep as they could. There was no courtesy staging but you had to keep both stage lights on before the green. Only did it one time. Other than the purse, (I got $1200) it was a total bad joke.

Both boys used the technique to go to the finals in different classes, heads-up & index; one of them won & the other took 2nd. The track fixed the issue by turning off AutoStart & manually using the starter for a larger window of randomization.

Winners will always figure out ways to exploit the rules or lack of to their advantage!

When I made this post I really wasn't referring to a bracket style tree instant green. I mainly refer to the outlaw index stuff on instant green that already exists. I've tried to run a few of these races already and I find it interesting that it has almost no true class racer interest. Guys on our side of the fence seem to turn there nose up at the money and challenge and I find that interesting. I'll run anything, I like the challenge. From NHRA .90 stuff with normal P/T and full electronics to outlaw index on no prep with no electronics and instant green. If you can do one, you can do the other, but most people won't.

I'm glad the track fixed that so people wouldn't/couldn't guess it. That was complete horse **** and unsportsmanlike. Legal, within the rules, but dishonorable.

Bret Kepner has been preaching instant green for 25 years (or more). IMO, too many people are scared of anything "different", so it's never gotten any serious traction.
