DRR Trophy |
Have had heat stress many timed at the races. Had heat stroke twice. That is nothing to play with. Second one doc said the more you get that the less tolerant you get to heat. Pretty sure I got a little mild heat stress last week at work. Clammy, kinda cool feeling, not sweating much. Went inside and sat down in front of the open fridge and had a couple glasses of water. Started feeling better, about that time the boss walks in and says why is the fridge open? Well captain, because your A/C in this building SUCKS and I am having a little heat stress, trying to cool off. Luckily he understood. Actual air temp 104 and heat index 117. In 2012 I believe it was, I saw heat index over 120 for about a week straight and no a/c in that shop at all. Just a port-a-cool which is a joke in humid air like we have here. I think the doc is right because I'm a lot less tolerant than I was when I was in my 20's and 30's.

Observed a guy suffering from heat stroke. This was on a remote location in a second world country. The ambulance took hours to get there. There was a guy under both arms and he could barely navigate, again, after sever hours waiting in A/C. As you said, nothing to play with. Illegitimi non carborundum

At the Bracket finals this past weekend racing was stopped 3 times that I know of so the ambulance crew could tend to someone who had passed out or suffering heat stress from the brutal heat and humidity. Also racing was stopped due to a collision between a electric scooter and golf cart, a girl suffered a broken leg and other injuries. Me personally couldn't wait to get my helmet and fire suit off after a run and drench myself with ice water Rough weekend for sure

We're headed to Bakersfield this weekend. Only going to be 108 and 105. It's insane. We're running at night, but qualifying will be @ 5pm.. the hottest part of the day. Hopefully we survive. You think they would re-schedule.... We will spend some quality time in the RV for sure. Mark Yeager

Pretty much a testament to the softening of society. I don't ever recall hearing about heat stress/stroke when, as a kid, I lived on a farm with my grandparents. Cut hay, bail hay, pickup hay, put hay in the barn, again never heard of it. If it did happen there wasn't any A/C or ice refuge. Just a pleasant shade tree at best. Illegitimi non carborundum

Coach gave us salt tablets for the two a day football practices....never saw a drop of water or Gatorade, it hadn't been invented yet. In my advanced age, I've gotten really dehydrated a couple of times, it sucks. "Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular." Dave Cook N375

I worked in a factory that was beastly hot and they had salt tablet dispensers... take as many as you want. Table salt is, of course, sodium chloride, the sodium is a major electrolyte which is required for hydration to occur. But you need water too there Coach. Sounds like he was following the bad advice of the day, seems I recall Bear Bryant (or one of the major FB coaches) not allowing water. Gotta tough em up! Illegitimi non carborundum

Same here when I played high school football back in the late 70's. We all got a turn drinking out of a garden hose after one hour, then again when practice was over. That was it. That said, those were different times. The house I grew up in didn't have A/C until dad got a window unit when I was a teenager. None of the schools I went to had A/C until I started high school (it was a new building). Dad didn't get a car with A/C until I was 9 years old (a 71 Impala) and he rarely tuned it on because he said "that just wastes gas." How many of us do our own yard work anymore? I don't. If you spend little to no time outside, then yes, the heat is difficult. I'm making an effort to get outside every day and get some exercise, even if it's hot and humid. It's the only way to survive a hot day at the track. Mike

Sonoma is planned to run a National Event on July 17-19 on the just released 2026 schedule. Not likely to run a LODRS race though. SAD! Big change: no early 2026 LVMS event this year! Just the end of year Oct.29 - Nov. 1 event!
