My son can't keep up. Thanks for noticing. It's a lot of work, time and $ but we make a good Team and it has paid off.
Here's what's really going on, Ed. You're building memories and a solid relationship with your son. You can't put a price on that other that it's priceless. You're no knucklehead so you already know that. I'd have given anything to have raced with my Dad. So I did it with my sons. Racing has always been expensive. I had GTOs and a Z-28 but my first new car was 70 Nova 396/402 that a paid $3050 for. The same price my buddy Darrell gave to Booth & Arons for a small block gasser engine that didn't include the fuel injection. I didn't have much that in the 57 Chevy M/SA I had just finished. Drag racing has changed. If it's for the good or not I don't know but, I intend to soldier on. I just got the completion date for my new trailer after six months of screwing around in the design. I pee when I don't want to and can't when I do. Sitting in the race car scrunches me up like a toothpaste tube so I'm safe nomad Bruce Guertin Easily distracted by bright shiny objects. I just got a quote for a 55 gallon drum of VP C15, (including the 9% California sales tax) is: $1,108.53. $20.16 for a gallon of %@$#&$# gas! Bob

Bob, as I said to Rich, WHY do you chose to run that fuel? We are bracket racing and there is no measurable performance on the time slip. Bruce, I agree and I'm very happy I've gotten to spend all this time with him. I have the relationship with him that I wish I had with my father.

Think of it like cigarettes once were. Very cheap. Used to be 20-25 cents a pack and never cost much till the govt decided to do anything they could to shut big tobacco down. Taxes thru the moon and fees and lawsuit settlements. $7-$8 a pack ! Race fuel was $15-$20 for 5 gallons. Sunoco purple. How could it possibly go to $60-$80-$100 for some higher octane fuels. VP was always higher but 10-12 bucks a gallon not that long ago. Now 20 or more a gallon !! Taxes, fees, middle men adding profit. Govt adding taxes is how I believe they will try to get at GUNS. Make ammo very expensive and they aren’t stupid so they will also make reloading materials also very expensive. I’m probably switching back to methanol but usually anytime I make a change like that the price will rise !

Total car counts off these days. Some tracks pull better than others. Supposedly drag racing is dying, I guess I am too. Until then I will keep showing up and donating. I have minimal investment in car and do as much as I can independently to keep operating cost low. I frequently run both top and 3rd bulb cause it is fun. I enjoy going to track and seeing buddies and competing. It is bracket racing so the playing field is as level as it can get.

I take my '63 falcon to Vegas and use the good race fuel, Chevron 91. I race in the Sportsman class and if I win ($200-$250) I'm making money!!! Has anyone else tried this? I have a friend that races in pro in Vegas that hasn't had the engine out of his car in 18YEARS! He is going rounds too. I would have been excited to have my 13 second Falcon in the '70's when I started and after going full circle with race cars and 5 championships bracket racing, Im having fun again. I feel like all we need out West is a few more rinky dink 1/8 tracks where people can have fun again. Throw out your electronics, cross talk, and whatever else it is you think you need, jump in a 12 second street car and enjoy life again. Right Tom Worthington? I'm not in a bad mood, I just look that way.........

Sounds like fun to me too. I know some guys would say how can you justify building a pipe rack and spending all that time and money to make it fast and then race for $250? Well, IMO that money I spent on the car was a sunk cost. I spend it not to spend and race for more money. 99% of those who spend the money to go race big money races DONT BREAK EVEN on it. So I separate the money spent. You spent the money on the car. Now what do you want to do with it? There is not a thing wrong with the answer that you want to spend $50 to race for $250. If there is some decent competition and it's a fun race experience, then why not? Spending more to travel further and risk more, doesn't by definition make it more fun does it? Yes, B King, I have been home way too much this year. I hope we get a few more race days this year and somehow get back to some kind of normal. I'm not in a bad mood, I just look that way.........

Wait. You mean there are actually TWO of us? Take care. Tom Worthington If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

No, there's three of us. I race my 65 Impala that I drive on the street. Runs mid-14's in the 1/4 mile at 95mph, on 93 unleaded. After 7 Summit Series events so far this year ($40 entry, $15 buy backs) I have two final round appearances (one win, one runner up) and I've made $475. There are two points races left. The $475 will more than cover all my entries and buy backs for the season. It costs me 11 gallons of 87 unleaded in my Suburban to trailer the car to and from the track every week, so I figure it costs me about $20 per week to race. I'm having a blast and it essentially costs me nothing. I figure my drag radials will last 5 seasons or more, I don't even do a burnout - just drive around the water, pull up to the line, and go When I sold my Chevelle which ran 11.50's in the 1/4 mile (which was the cut off ET for Sportsman at the time) I did not think I would enjoy racing a slower car, but I have found it to be just as much fun. I might buy/build another faster car when I retire, but right now I'm just having a great time. Mike
