Obama defends sweeping surveillance efforts

President Obama on Friday defended the government’s collection of data on the phone records of millions of Americans, saying that it was a modest encroachment on privacy and one he thinks is both lawful and justified in order to identify terrorists plotting to attack the United States.
Some members now think the issue should be reexamined.

My how the tide has shifted!
Back in the era of President Bush we had FLEEBAGGERS screaming to the high heavens because phone calls to SOME foreign nations were being screened!
Now these same hypocrites are backing "totus" 100% when American citizens phones and every other portion of their lives is being snooped into!
This is a GROSS VIOLATION of the Untied States CONSTITUTION and very few politicians have the spine to step forward and say so!!!!!
Simply because the executive, congressional and judicial branches approve does NOT MAKE IT CONSTITUTIONAL!!!!!

While Washington politicians take most of the blame for dysfunction, voters make their job infinitely harder by routinely abandoning their stated policy preferences out of ****le partisanship.

The Pew poll measures Americans’ views of the surveillance state and how they’ve changed since the George W. Bush administration. On the broadest level, there doesn’t appear to have been much change. Today, 62 percent of Americans say investigating terrorism is more important than maintaining personal privacy; 34 percent disagree. In January 2006, just after news broke of the Bush administration’s NSA surveillance program, 65 percent of Americans said that terrorism justified the intrusion into privacy, and just 32 percent disagreed. Not much difference, right?

When Bush was president, Republicans supported the program by a three-to-one margin (75 percent) and Democrats were nearly as strong in their opposition (61 percent). A similar partisan breakdown existed on the question of e-mail monitoring: Most Republicans (53 to 38 percent) thought it should be allowed; most Democrats (51 to 41 percent) thought it should be forbidden.

Flash forward to today and a Democratic president. Now Republicans are essentially split on the acceptability of NSA surveillance (52 percent favor it; 47 percent oppose it), while a strong majority of Democrats (64 percent) supports the program. The two parties—but Democrats especially—have changed position.

One problem with those polls!
When President Bush was in office there was zero indication that the average American citizen was being spied upon!!!!!
Now the spying is going on wholesale!!!!!
As one of the founders stated, paraphrasing, "if you'll trade your liberty and privacy for security eventually you'll end up with neither!!!!!"

Rules is rules. When the patriot act was accepted, it opened the door to this stuff. Anyone who didn't have the forsight to see where it could lead shouldn't be voting on bills.

Obama’s remarks about Catholic schools spark new fight with church

President Obama’s remarks on Catholic schools during his trip to Northern Ireland this week have sparked an unexpected uproar, with critics accusing him of diminishing religious education.

The backlash, which has grown steadily since Mr. Obama made the comments Monday, once again has put the commander in chief at odds with the Roman Catholic Church, which is fighting a provision in the president’s health care law that requires religious institutions to provide free birth control for their employees.

Mr. Obama is under fire
