Trying to figure out how far a car would travel in .004 second at 130mph. I somehow came up with 9.15 inches. Just wondering if that is correct or if it's not even close.

Speed X 5280 divided by 3600 = distance per second

Therefore 130 mph X 5280 divided by 3600 = 190.66666 ft. per second
19.666 ft. per .10 second
1.9 ft. per .01 seconds
.19666 ft. per .001

Another (faster but not as exact) formula used is speed X 1.47 therefore 130 X 1.47 = 191.1000

Minor quibble but if you took the stripe, your MPH is irrelevant. The trailing car's MPH is what matters.

Only changes it .01". Makes it a little closer to your 5/16", which is pretty much the right fraction to use. Some good work!

Thanks, but my Wife is a teacher, I'll have to credit her with that one...…

She did say it was a little over 5/16"

Just call me stripe hog!

Make it easier

17.6 x MPH x MOV in seconds

Also the MPH that should be used is the car that crosses the finish line second, which is not necessarily your MPH!

Same thing, just one is in feet and the other in inches!

TOP 38 has it 100% correct....below is the long version of where the 17.6 comes from

5280/60/60*12=17.6

MOV*MPH*5280/60/60*12

got beat to finish line by .0051

1/4 mile speed of 2nd to finish line 175.966

.0051*175.966*5280/60/60*12 = 15.795 inches behind

*5280 makes miles per hour feet per hour
/60 makes feet per hour feet per minute
/60 makes feet per minute feet per second
*12 makes feet per second inches per second
MOV is what part of a second you were behind

slightly inacurate in that the trap speed is assumed to be the speed during the MOV
