SMALL BLOCK ALKY…
Yes I would say that piston has been "kissing" head on quelch side-never seen that in my small blocks with Ross 4032 piston and tool steel pins 14.5 on alky

This and more than likely the wrong camshaft creating excessive cylinder pressure with the added volume of the alcohol.

Whomp. Mine cracked the same way. Was told by piston manufacturer wrist pin was too weak. Bob installed thicker wall wrist pins.

For those wondering you dont have to guess what happens when it happens.

Correct, been down that road. Made the change. No issues. From what I was told it's about an 800 hp deal with the small blocks. Cup cars figured it out for us back in the day.

What was recommended at the 800hp level…

Don't remember exactly, but it was for sure wall thickness. Here is some good info.

I want to say bob put .250 wall pins in mine over the summer when this happened to me

EP, did they shorten up the pin any? I've seen where pins have been shortened to stiffen them and a strutted piston was used. It takes less wall thickness if they are shorter but the piston design changes.

same length just thicker. piston manufacturer is aware of the problem and says thicker pins should fix. mine is a 427 similar to whompers just not as good. mine cracked over the summer and whomper told me exactly what it was. mine cracked all of the way through to the wrist pin. probably had one more crank left in it. i got lucky.

Whomp says he is getting around 220 1/8 mile runs. i had close to 250 to 300 runs, 1/8 and 1/4 mile.

What's really crazy is that we are even talking about these pins flexing! Pretty amazing if you think about it.

I never gave it a thought, until after I should have. The turbos will find that weak spot eventually. It was the pins.

Got to get it apart first….but I guarantee it’s a cracked piston doing just like the last time….leaning toward the fuel being in the back with an electric pump….My argument is how would it make it 200+ runs if it was detonating…
