Q: Quiet, low-restriction muffler for tow rig

Guys, I'm fixing up the exhaust system on my old, '90 Chevy C3500 tow vehicle.

I replaced the headers, and wish to mount a pair of the quietest, low-restriction mufflers I can find. I'm thinking of the Flowmaster line, but will of course consider others.

Any suggestions? Thank you much!

Even with a stock engine and mufflers, running headers will often create a resonant frequency "buzz" inside the vehicle at right around cruise RPM (1800-2200 RPM). It can be a annoying to some, because you are almost constantly in that RPM range. If you get this issue, and want to eliminate it, adding a crossover tube (H-Pipe or X-Pipe) between the 2 exhaust pipes will double the frequency of the exhaust pulses from each pipe, which moves the resonant frequency down to half of the RPM as before, (about 1,000), so you pass through the buzz quickly right off idle, and won't have it constantly vibrating while you drive around town.

We always used generic muffler shop "Turbo mufflers", if you'll have full tailpipes, they sound good, pretty quiet.

On my '87 Dually, and my G-20 van I just removed the mufflers, and inserted a straight pipe. the catalytic converter keeps them quiet. Could barely hear the Dually running.

You do realize that there will be nothing you can do to improve the power or fuel mileage, right?

I greatly improved the driveability of the Dually by moving the O2 sensor from the exhaust manifold to the the Y-pipe merge point, and used a heated O2 sensor.

The Thrush Cherry Bomb Vortex muffler is a nice muffler with low restriction and not too loud. I do think the quieter they are for most part the more restrictive they are.

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful responses.

I was thinking about the Thrush 17715 muffler, available through local, chain parts dealers for about 50 bucks each.

But then, after installing newer headers and fixing all the exhaust leaks, the system now seems acceptably quiet, even with what I think are Flowmaster 40s or 44s.
Quite a change in character!!

I will run it for awhile, even though the Flowmasters seem to have a more metallic tone, and not the deep rumble I'd like for my tow rig.

For better fuel economy, I'm looking at a newer, more modern truck in a year or two.
