I have not found any topics or information on what issues cause inconsistent reaction times that are caused by needing glasses. I have heard multiple times of this happening but nothing written or any info on this issue. MY issue or problem I am having is my eyes have been hurting and I have problems looking at digital stuff, cell phone screens and computers, general irritation. Went to family doctor, then optometrist. He said I have 20/20 but I have an astigmatism and need glasses. Also have dry eyes. I’m almost 39 and know around that time most people need reading glasses about then but this seems different to me. ANY advice is very welcomed and wanted. Thanks

If you have dry eyes you can help to get them to lubricate naturally again. It’s possible your “eyelid” ducts (not tear) are somewhat plugged up.

Using a wet hot wash cloth you warm your eyes and then gently message the lower eye lid forcing the blocked fluid out. You do this when the eye lids are in the white of the eye “Not” on the Cornea.
Lightly clean your eyes and then use any type of lubricating eye drops afterwards. Do this every morning.

You want to keep your eyes lubricated at night while at rest. Using a product like Muro 128 Bausch & Lomb 5% Ointment or Walgreens Sodium Chloride Ophthalmic Ointment (Ointment, Not Drops) will do this. You use a very small amount in both eyes prior to bed.

Correct your dry eye problem before it possibly damages your cornea. This can happen, I know!

If I find the links to pamphlets I have about this from my ophthalmologist I’ll post.

You might need to see an Ophthalmologist.

Astigmatism will effect reactions times and it will also cause eye strain and headaches. You'll be surprised how much better you'll see after you get your glasses. I got my first pair when I was 39. When you get your glasses walk outside and look at some trees. Before glasses you'd see the trees. With your glasses you'll see the leaves.

I've never had any problems with dry eye so I can't comment on that.

Systane Ultra eye drops work well for me.

Get the glasses, and prescription shades.

Here's my story. I have been wearing glasses for a few years now. I was diagnosed with Keratoconus in my left eye (I'm left eye dominant) and it is a real struggle driving and racing at night. The bright lights make it extremely hard for me to see and if I am lazy or lose focus, I see 3 or 4 top bulbs light up. I have to be up on the wheel and focused which is tough for me on some of these long 8 & 9 round races. I'm supposed to wear a hard contact but can't, no matter how hard I try, I just can't wear it. So my doctor said to purchase cheap glasses in hopes that the lens would focus the light and I wouldn't see multiple images. I did step up to an anti-glare and transition lens. You'll see me at the track holding my glasses out in the sun before I pull into the water box since the transition doesn't work in my doorcar.

I have read recently they have a few new treatments so thanks to you guys, I am making an appointment with a specialist to see what we can do.

It can be a challenge, you just have to train your mind to focus.

I found a site that has a pretty good representation of how I see things below.

I have astigmatism and wear glasses. I don't like them but they don't bother me that bad. I call them my "secret weapon" and I have data to prove that they really are.

I've tried contacts several times but my eyes are very dry. I wish I could wear them but it just doesn't work out. The single day contacts are a lot better but I don't think I could wear them every day.

I'm really surprised you can see 20/20 with astigmatism. Regardless, I notice a huge reduction in glare with my glasses, especially at night. Lights have a halo effect without my glasses.

If you have 20/20, I would try to stay away from glasses 100% of the time, but you could possibly see some difference at night. I've seen several opthamalogists and opticians over the years with a wide range of results. I can assure you they are not created equal. Try to find a good one.

One other thing I've noticed is that I'm very sensitive to lens quality with glasses. After a year or more the lenses seem to get hazy and can develop "checks" "spider webs" or "swirls". This really affects me at night.

I'm really not a fan of sunglasses for racing and try my best not to wear them at all while I'm still in.

(sorry about the spelling, lol)

I went to Optometrist Tuesday evening. He had me try Systane, and two others for dry eye. I noticed a great difference with Systane. It was the best i tested. I have not picked out glasses yet. Waiting of wife to go with me to pick them out for me. He says I have dry eye but my eyes do not water all the time like description said they would. I posted a couple months ago about more rollout for better/quicker reaction time and I feel like it was me all along. Not sure yet. Heck my eyes are bothering me now as I type this in my iPhone.

I wear glasses and when I talked to my optometrist I told him I drag race and wanted to see the lights as good as possible. It seemed to help some.

I am now wearing glasses that darken automatically and I like them to. For me it seems to make transition from bright sunlight to night racing easier.

I had LASIK a couple of years after that. During the initial exam, both Dr's said that I had dry eyes and that they could help. When you look at the inside lower corner of your eye, you'll see the tiny hole. Tears DO NOT come out of this hole, they drain from there into your sinuses - that's why people's noses run when they cry. At any rate, the Dr inserted a tiny plug in each of these prior to surgery. A couple of weeks after the surgery, I noticed that I couldn't feel them any more. Dr. said having them fall out is common and I probably blinked them away. I still have 20:20 vision and for some reason, no more dry eyes.

Good luck to you, hope you get this resolved. I guess an option is having a crew member with a bullhorn behind the starting line screaming, "Go, dammit, go!!!", but I'm hoping you don't ha ve to resort to that...

I had cataract surgery done last year. Big, big difference. You don't realize that this sneaks up on you. This is a one time deal good for life.
Do that if you have them before looking at lasik. It may be all that's needed.

The one thing that I don't understand is that they now say I have 20/20 vision. I told the doc that it is certainly way better but it's not the 20/20 of my youth. Why? No real answer yet. 1 yr visit coming up in a couple of months.

Good topic, glad it was brought up. Tom R, I never heard of Keratoconus, but your post has me wondering. I occasionally have what I call "multiple vision", (usually in the first couple hours after I wake up), but it is strange, because I see a vertical stack of images when I look at a single object, (most noticeable to me are lights, such as a distant porch light or street light). A single light bulb a half block away looks like 3 or 4 round lights stacked vertically, with a cone-shaped one on top pointing upward, and another at the bottom pointing downward. In the daytime it just makes everything look extremely blurred. What bugs me the most, is if I close either eye, the other one still sees that same effect. It is never just one eye doing it. Which has me thinking it might be in my brain, not my eyeballs. Today my eyesight is close to perfect. Tomorrow, who knows. It started doing this a few months back, so I have not yet tried racing with the condition, thinking it probably would not go well. This discussion has made me decide to call an eye Dr. today and schedule an appt.
Thanks guys. Wink
