No bull hockey, but I want to get your opinion which I do trust, believe it or not. A guy posted that he had a 71 Camaro. He posted that he ran a mid 10's at 136 mph. He posted that he had a 600 horsepower 302 in this car with a Nash 5 speed and a 6.50 gear in a 9 inch Ford. I calculated the approximate engine RPM, crossing to be 9000 rpm +. He posted that he had 32" rubber on a leaf spring with Caltracs and double adjustable coil overs on all four corners. My question is this. Is this even possible, or do such set ups exist, ie horsepower from a 302, crossing rpms, etc. I would really appreciate your opinion. _____________________________ Wes Scott

I have a buddy who has done 9.32 @ 144 in a 71 Nova with a Nash 5-speed, no power adders. 372ci with a tunnel ram and dual 4bbls. I think his gear is more like a 5.57, and he keeps RPM's to something like 8800 I believe. So yes, I would say that what you describe is very do-able. Mike

But I acknowledge that your question is posed to Ed, and that I am a clueless wannabe and career test-and-tuner who has done NOTHING Mike

Ok Wes, I'll bite but I'd like to see his post as I have no real info about the car/combo. Here's what I do know, a 600HP 302 is 2HP per cubic inch and that is no bracket engine nor is it a budget build and yes would be a high rpm engine. All else the same, automatic vs. manual, the manual typically MPH 3-4 faster.

I'd like to see this setup with leaf springs AND coilovers! My car has both, but does not have coilovers on all four corners. Tony Leonard

He took the post down. (Was on another website) 302, Nash 5 speed, 6.50 gears, 32 inch rubber, mid 10’s at 136 mph. Just perked my interest. I agree the 600 horses in the 302 would cost a bunch. Her tongue would be hanging out. _____________________________ Wes Scott

Can certainly run a coil over shocks without the spring in the back, but what's the point unless he didn't want to put ladder bars in there also?

Now we're into a philosophical debate. Is a shock that is threaded on the outside of the body, but without a spring on it, still a coilover shock? Tony Leonard

There's nothing mentioned about the weight of the car and the elevation at which said car made these passes. David Deming 1974 Chevy Nova Custom Hatchback Horsepower Innovations E85 Carb

The owner of the car in question sent me this: "1970 z28 ran D/S THEN SS/H THEN E/MP THEN G/GAS . everytime i raced i wanted to go faster. anyway i finally went to NHRA gas class. i added a full frame with a 12 point certified then a dana 60, 4 link, coil overs wheelie bars a dougnash 5 speed, the rear was built by strange enginering, a 5 point harness full gauges all mechanical, super tricks 14.00x32 and 4,00x 15 up front 90/10 shocks and racing front springs. engine was lowered 1" and set back 3". engine was a typical 302, a 3970010 block and 1178 crank with 6" brc rods and brc gas ported pistons 13.86 to one. a 705 lift cam cam dynamics with 1.5 crane rockes and roller lifter with stud girdle and 3/8" pushrods, 7/16 studs special guilde plates, angle milled 125 thous to a 52 cc head, titanuim 205 valves with soduim 160s exhausts, a TR1X tunnel ram with dual 660s with 850 base plates hutter did for me with an accel dual point tach drive dist. had 60s hp at the flywheel, 50 lb flywheel 12 bolt 11" clutch scattershield driveshaft loops and engine had a 51% over balance. use to launch car at 9800 shift at 9800 then through the eyes at 10,400 thus running 6.5 @107 and 10.32@135 in quarter. that should give you an idea. car weighed 3550 so 11 lbs per cube. hope that helps , heads where 492s with extenive porting and headers jere stahl built for the car where 2 1/8 with reversion plates." I don't remember G/Gas, but that doesn't matter. Not sure what "overbalance" is but then again I am not very bright. _____________________________ Wes Scott
