SBC / BBC question
On my new dragster the small block barely fits in the chassis. It was hitting on the front motor mount pad. I had to trim about 1/8 inch off to clear the steering. When I go to NE1 I would like to go with a Big Block Chevy. Now I think at the motor mount pad they are same width apart but Dart said the BBC is wider there? They use same motor stand? Seems to me at that location the width is the same.
Now I realize it is a little longer and taller but I THINK the width at the front motor mount pads are the same.

Am I wrong?

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

Most cases in the oem when both were available in the vehicle the motor mounts are different. In the later models (after 1974?) If you install a BBC useing the sbc mounts usually the pan is on the crossmember or the drag link. If you have both blocks a measuring tape will tell you what you want to know.

Curly,
Photos may need to be needed. I am trying to picture how a new FED will NOT accept a small block AND hits the drag link.

I would say that due to the extra length of the BB you may be in trouble.

Frame spreader needed?

I have had nothing but dragsters my whole life.
I have had to dress down the filter pad once in a while and on a purpose built SB FED version dress the side Motor mounts on occasion.

The BB is wider. No way around that.
Using the Tri five front motor mount hole for measurement. The SBC is 9.12 CtoC. The BB is 11.140 CtoC.

It may be time to start thinking about building a kick butt small block.

Well I know it is taller, longer and wider but I THINK where the front motor mount pad is those 3 bolts holes it is the same on BBC and SBC?

For instance this engine cradle is SAME width at all four mounting points for BBC and SBC. Yet Dart told me the BBC is wider at the front mounts?

Just build a blown Small block, it will be lighter, faster and best of all it will look cool. Bet you could build it cheaper too, lots of inexpensive blower stuff on the used market

You are asking about the SIDE mounts, not the front.
Are you really going to try to mount the engine at those points?

Likely not so cut them off.

No it does not attach there but those side mounts were hitting on steering shaft. It has typical motor plate mounts. But IF the block is wider at the side mount like Dart said then no way it would fit.

Shoot Bruce. Just build a 454 small block. Lighter and likely quicker because of it.
Also, Rusty hit it..

Since you kept calling the side mounts the front I bet they assumed you meant the front of the block like I did for a while.

What is in the car in the picture?

It's either that or run your altered.

The picture is the new dragster currently running old motor and transmission. Going to get a few races in it before I paint it.

Bruce, I can't see the pictures, (work computer blocks almost everything), but I know you can swap BBC & SBC engines all day long in almost any 66-74 Chevy, using the same frame stands. Heck, probably even the same motor mounts.
I believe the dimensions are the same on the side mounts. If you get to a point where your SBC is out of the car, and want to test fit a BBC, I have a bare 454 block you can borrow.

Thanks, nothing quite like driving a front engine car (Dragster or Altered). I know it may not be the best tool for the job but it is a blast to drive.

Wish I had one to plug in one of our 636 pieces. Pretty sure it would run 6.60’s. We ran 6.70’s @ 2300#
