Dart block heater
For anyone interested, I was able to purchase block heaters made by Zero Start. This brand is sold by Jegs, O'Reilys and I found them on Amazon. The element is designed different than the Katz ones and fit perfectly.

No different than your water heater in your house the element is designed to be in water not air. It will cause the element to overheat. It's also true for the heating pads, if you allow the edges to peel the pad can overheat and burn itself up.

What part # Zerostart heater did you buy? Is it 600W or 1000W?

How does it overheat if water is flowing around it? They are mounted at bottom of block so other than a couple little bubbles flowing through system I can’t see them overheating.

I don't make them or sell them, but if you call Kats they will tell you not to run the motor or the water pump for that reason. I ran my diesel tractor while plugged in, had to buy a new Kats heater and got the advice from them.

How will heating the coolant water get the oil, rods, crank and everything inside up to temp?
Block gets hot, pistons dont, clearance is bigger piston rocks in bore.....

Heat the oil also. You aren’t going to get the water hot enough to cause a problem anyway. Just decrease the warm up time. Especially helpful between rounds at a cool weather race.

If you are sitting there for a couple hours waiting to run or as some guys I know who get there the night before and plug them in all night the whole motor will see some heat. We are not talking about warming up a motor in half hour with them. I used to have an oil temp gauge on my other car and the oil will follow water temp as soon as you fire it up and run it a bit.

That's the one we use in our Big M block too. Actually two of them with the Kat's 24150 silicone pad on the oil pan for warming the oil. If you have a real tight fitting engine diaper using the oil pan heater may require a "heat resistant" barrier between heat pad and the absorbent material in the diaper...

The element(s) must maintain constant contact with the liquid, as soon as it begins to overheat in a spot, it will repel the liquid, furthering the damaging overheating.....
