MSD Distributer W/Slip Collar
I had to buy a new distributer to replace low profile one I had. Fits fine and will work out fine.
In the pack containing the collar there was a hard red washer the size of a regular gasket, and a large diameter thick O-ring. Where do these go? The instructions make no mention of them.

5. Install the gasket or O-ring and apply a
liberal amount of the supplied lubricant to the
distributor gear. CHEVY: The supplied O-rings
can only be used if the block has been modied
as shown in Figure 3.

If I recall correctly, the red circular gasket does not fit over the housing, and I thought the rubber O ring fits in a provided groove on the distributor gasket location, which would replace paper gasket.

I use the curved side of a b a s t a r d file to trim the edge (couple thou) off the red gasket and slides right on.

Triple Nickel
Install distributor with no gasket, slip collar loose, fully seat distributor, push collar down with no gasket, tighten collar, remove distributor, tighten set screws in collar to shaft, install red gasket, re-drop distributor as normal.

Never seen the big fat o ring, I don't know.

The other two smaller o rings are for the bottom of the distributor housing to seal inside the block, but shouldn't be used unless the block is fitted for them. See note above.

Who here uses the melonized distributor gears? What brand are you using that fits 0.500 in. diameter shaft distributors? I’m considering (never tried) replacing with melonized instead of the bronze gear this time. What say you…..

Thanks for bringing the subject up & I'm looking to change my bronze out to the melonized. They look a little pricey, but I'm sure they are worth the money.

Agreed. Comp Cams sells melonized for $107 on Summit Pro Shop. Then Summit offers Summit Brand melonized for $70. I have no clue as what the difference is.

Talked to a friend tonight and he uses the COMP Cams Composite Distributor Gear Manufactured from Carbon Ultra-Poly in a BB Pontiac. These are very expensive.

I have a Comp Cams composite that's new in the box somewhere. My engine builder refused to use it.

My friend builds his own BB Pontiac engine and said his Carbon Ultra-Poly distributor gear has been in it for longer than he can remember, never replaced and still looks good.
