A question for those using Moser axles, spool, hardware

Racers,

I am a long-time, satisfied user of Strange Engineering products, but for this build-up on my Chevy Colorado, I am considering Moser. It is a Chevy 12 bolt, and I will need axles, spool, brakes, and other hardware.

Tell me about your experience with Moser products.

Been under my car from 2004 when I built it, 12 boult with 33 spline axle and spool package from moser. car weighs 2700 lbs, with me in it and runs 5.80s turned down a little, will run 5.60s . I have very been happy with them.

Had this car since 2003. Has Moser Diff, spoil and axles all light weight . Zero issues at 3600 lbs. Strange brakes too...

40 spline Moser axles and 4.56:1 gears behind a 513 hp (to the rear wheels) bbc and power glide. I have nothing but good things to say about Moser. Never a minutes trouble, and great customer service / technical support.

That said, I had installed moser 33 spline axles and spool in the 12 bolt in my Chevelle and never had an issue though I only got about 200 passes on a ring & pinion, I believe due to case deflection, which was about 100 more than similar powered stockers with 12 bolt rears.

That said 2, for a purpose built race car, I wouldn’t use anything but Mark Williams.

Are you dead set on a 12 bolt? For a purpose built car I think 9" and Dana are the only 2 I would want to see used.

One of the most successful projects I ever built had M/W components. I remembrance and respect of that car, I think M/W is a good choice for my Colorado.

Note, with a 350 SBC of about 550 horses a 12 bolt is more than acceptable.

Larry, call Jeff Hefler at Pro 1 safety. he runs a lot of Moser stuff. He may be a dealer not sure but he will shoot you straight.

Do yourself a favor and buy the entire rear end package. The housing is much stronger than a GM housing. I've been running the Moser 12 bolt since 2005. I upgraded to pro gears later and broke a tooth over 10 years after that. Installed a new set of pro gears and no problems since. The housing and everything in it has been flawless.

I agree, the aftermarket, originally KTRE 12 bolt housing is much stronger than the OEM housing.

Ok. If you are going to buy a whole new housing why wouldn't you just go to a 9". If you are saving money and using the stock housing buying aftermarket pieces and keeping it to mid 6s, ok I see your strategy and think it's solid.

9" costs about $1,500 more than a 12 bolt and really not needed in a 6 second car. (old prices, I haven't looked in years)
All in all it's about break even to buy the complete rear with upgraded housing. Sell the GM housing to make up the difference. Adder is you get the good housing ends and don't have to fool with the c-clip eliminator kits that always leak or have to cut the ends off and weld on new ends.

I added the Mark Williams cap and a girdle back cover to my stock case and it made a huge difference in gear life over the cast caps.

I have 328 runs on this set of gears. Mostly footbrake but I do mix in some pro tree occasionally. Before around 200-220 runs give or take and I would lose a gear set. 1.23-1.26 60' but only 2050lbs. For heavier cars I would do the change for certain to them or Strange's caps.

I've had great service out of both Moser and Strange, never really had a car with MW parts but have seen some up close, by far much higher quality that both Strange and Moser. Moser and Strange are about equally priced so if you want nicer looking stuff, sometimes lighter go with the Strange, if you want the best of the best mark williams to me seems the logical answer.
