The way the diesel used truck market is and the way the technology and expense to repair is they just don't make any sense. I can buy a used road tractor to tow with cheaper then a worn out pickup truck. The known expensive problems with some of them has really driven the price of the known better ones crazy.

That is great to hear about the 6.6's. I think they have the 40 speed transmission too....or so lol. I think they were introduced in 2020? Used market for me only.

picked up a 2014 silverado 1500 5.3 for 20k with 100k on the clock last month. reminds me of the old camper specials of days gone by, sliding rear window, 4 corner bed steps, heavy shocks. put our 1800 lb tongue weight trailer on it, it sagged more than i would like, so put a set of 5k airbags on it, towed the first time yesterday pulled a lot better than i thought it would with the 327 engine. had a full tank of gas, so dont have any mpg info yet.

I bought a 2007 3500 cat eye regular cab dually from my work. They said it would not run and it had over 250,000 miles so I basically got it for nothing.
I bought a new battery started the truck up and ran great, also it only had 108,000 miles with all new tires, brakes, and a fresh tune up. I told them next time they have a pile to please let me know. LOL

I got a similar deal back around 1982 the company had a 1979 3/4 ton truck that would not run good at all. They had been putting regular gas in it and cats were plugged. Cut them off and put dual exhaust on it and it ran great. Got it real cheap.

My 02 HD2500 had the 6.0, and was a crew cab 4x4, so it was heavy to begin with. Had it for 10 years, towed my 10,000 Lb loaded trailer just fine on flat land, even at 80 MPH. The 4L80E trans was a 4 Spd overdrive and it was bulletproof. Got 10 MPG towing on the Hwy. Normal MPG (not towing) was around 12.9 average, best ever was a 500 mile hwy run with a tail wind, at 14.0 MPG. Short uphills were not too bad, but long upgrades, (miles long), were not good. It would maintain 65-70 on most, but would either stay in 3rd gear, or do the upshift, lose speed then downshift, accelerate then upshift, and repeat.
I got my 2015 D-Max 5-1/2 years ago, almost identical options other than engine. Like Rich and others said, the difference is like night & day. Pulls the same 10K Lbs up any hills at part throttle, as fast as you dare to go. The 6 speed Allison trans is rock solid, it never downshifts, ever. Same deal towing the 18,000 Lb 42 foot 5th wheel RV. Empty truck gets 18-23 MPG hwy, and the same 10 MPG towing as the gas truck. Much, MUCH less stressful towing. Neither truck needed airbags or equalizer hitches, both very stable.
Curious about all the comments regarding maintenance costs of the diesel? Mine had the Def Tank Heater replaced under warranty around 97K miles. It is at 149K now. I've had to replace 1 EGT sensor, (easy and cheap to do), and the thermostats, (not a bad job at all), and the oil pressure sensor, (another quick inexpensive job). Oil changes do take a 10 Qt/2.5 Gallon jug, so that is about $20 more than the 6.0 gas engine, but it goes 50% further between changes, so probably a wash. No spark plugs, wires, or coils to replace. I add a $12 gallon of DEF every 4-5,000 miles.
FUEL costs are the big difference to me, (locally diesel is a buck more than gas), and thanks to the idiot in the Capitol all fuel prices are at least $1 more than they should be.
The much better "unloaded" MPG helps offset that cost difference quite a bit. I won't go back unless I quit racing or switch back to an open trailer. Not planning to do that, but I am afraid the brainwashed environmental zealot freaks won't stop until they price dinosaur fuel beyond the means of most...

I have a 02 Silverado 2500 hd, 4x4, crew cad, long bed, pull 26 ft trailer, trying to get 9 mph. KN air filter helped , due to it had more power on the low end, and didn't down shift as much. It gets me bye, a little over 100k miles, no regrets.
