Goodyear Truck Tire Failure - Better Check Yours
My road trip through Oklahoma 2 weeks ago was interrupted to replace a tire. Began feeling a bit of vibration, so I pulled off the next exit, (middle of nowhere), and found a slight abnormality (bulging) on the tread of the right-front. (See first picture). We were about 30 miles from our planned stop for lunch and fuel, so I continued on, at slightly reduced speed. 18 miles later the vibes got worse, so I decided to change it out. (See 2nd pic - Looks like belt coming apart. Notice also the appearance of serious cracking in the rubber). These tires have been regularly rotated, and pressures always kept even and within 5 Lbs of spec.
These are Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tires, same exact model that came on the truck from the factory. Less than 2 years old, although they do have almost 45K miles on them. (3/4 of the way to the 60K mile warranty). Was planning on replacing the entire set soon, (not with GY tires, for reasons we have discussed on here previously). So that change was expedited by this shyt quality product. Type LT, Load Range E, 6 Ply Tread, (2 each of Steel, Polyester and Nylon), 2 Ply (Poly) Sidewalls. FWIW, The fella at Discount Tire told me the manufacturing of GY truck tires changed a few years ago, from true "Radial" construction, (where the belting wraps completely up the sidewalls), to something more like the old "Belted" style construction, with the belting plies laid lengthwise along the tread.
These tires are marked Made In USA on the sidewalls, but apparently some of their guys are too busy worrying about supporting BLM to pay attention to proper tire construction... Mad I highly recommend choosing a quality alternative from a different manufacturer.

Bucky, I agree, I should have changed it at the first stop. Lesson learned!

I don't know what they changed on Flickr, it no longer offers a BB Code for sharing photos. I used the Copy Link feature, apparently that does not work. I added links to them, hope that works?

What other picture storage/sharing site is compatible with these boards?

Looks like they were due changing even without the bulge. More likely the Oklahoma roads that did them in. LOL

Had same issue with GY 5 years ago. On the way to Bowling Green. While in BG, between qualifying, took truck to town and bought Michelen LT. Got bent over on price but those tires have over 60,000 and going strong. Guess getting bent over wasn't so bad after all.

Shake head Sounds like it might have changed your lifestyle. Laughing Hard I'm staying away from Bowling Green. JK

Michelins are the best. Have them on all my road vehicles.

The Goodyear Wrangler SR-A LT265/70R18 came on my truck and I’m on my forth set and the 3 sets before the set on the truck now have all gone at least 70,000 miles without issue. Thanks for the headsup though.

Goodyear quality has been poor for years.Their carcass is extremely weak with less material in it than other brands. We see more goodyear tires with shifted belts than any other brand.

The quality control inspectors at the local goodyear/dunlop plant come in and will not purchase goodyear tires...what does that tell you?

My denali came with goodyear eagles on it...they rode like crap and I fought pulling and vibrations for two years...two alignments and at least 8 rotate and balances...I finally replaced all four with Cooper Discoverers and every issue disappeared...over half tread life left on the goodyears but they were absolute junk....
