Oil pump rotation SBC when priming oil pump.
With the distributor out which way do you prime a sbc using a oil pump primer. Clockwise OR Counter clockwise???

Same as the firing order, clockwise

Make sure your primer has a support collar on the bottom of the shaft. It'll look just like the end of your distributor. If your primer doesn't have it don't use it. It can spread the tangs on the o/p driveshaft and you won't get the distributor to go down over it again.
Also, a good primer will have a large collar to simulate the distributor housing so oil can cross over to the lifters.

You will find the tool he described under several brands, look at ARP130-8802 to see an example.

A reworked old distributor makes a great tool. Grind gear so will not rub on cam and cut top of shaft off so you can attach a drill. Cheap if you have an old distributor.

Yes that AutoZone one works fine....just make sure the larger aluminum oil cross over piece is set-screwed in the correct place. Compare it to your distributor for proper location... The round ring/sleeve at the bottom of the shaft (opposite end from where the drill motor connects) is what I was talking about that goes on the outside ot the oil pump drive shaft to protect the tangs..you should get pretty good drag/resistance holding the drill motor as it builds oil pressure, that can spread those ears/tangs...again, compare it to your distributor and you'll see what it does.

I just take the gear off. I have never had it spread the tangs on the pump shaft. I guess a guy could accidentally drop the shaft out of the bottom of the housing but you would really have to work at it to do that. LOL

Yep, I use an old points distributor with a 1/2" drill to prime mine.

I have had mine I built since the early 1980s, works great

Best part about using an old distributor is that it will also plug off the cam bearing passage so that will also fill up with oil.

As mentioned above, just front off the cam gear teeth or just remove the cam gear.

I use a 1/2" drill on mine to produce enough torque to spin the pump and push oil into the engine. A 3/8" drill just doesn't seem to be enough but then my 3/8" is also around 40 years old.
